Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 128 sts. 1st row: P 2, k 2, * p 6, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 4. 2nd and 3rd rows: K 4, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2, k 2. 4th row: Repeat 1st row. 5th row: * P 6, k 2. Repeat from * across. 6th and 7th rows: * P 2, k 6. Repeat from * across. 8th row: Repeat 5th row. Hereafter repeat these 8 rows, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 104 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until there are 128 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 108 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 42 sts remain. Bind off.
Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 80 sts and work in pattern as for Back, descreasing 1 st at side edge every 10th row 4 times (76 sts). Work straight until piece measures 4 inches. On next row, make a buttonhole 6 sts in from front edge. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 6 sts; then, on next row, cast on 6 sts to replace those bound off). Work straight until piece measures 8½ inches. On next row make a buttonhole as before and work straight until piece measures 9 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 84 sts on needle. Hereafter keep underarm edge straight, but continue with front increases until 6 more sts are increased at front edge; at the same time, when underarm measures same as underarm of Back, shape armhole as follows: Starting at underarm edge, bind off 5 sts once, then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 14 sts in all are decreased (76 sts). Work straight until piece measures 7¼ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 3 sts every other row until 43 sts remain. Bind off.
Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 56 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 8th row until there are 100 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec, 1 st at end of each row until 60 sts remain. Now bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 24 sts remain. Bind off.
Pockets and Flaps. Lower Pockets: Cast on 32 sts and work in pattern for 3 inches. Bind off. For flaps, cast on 32 sts and work straight for 1½ inches. Bind off. Upper Pockets: Cast on 24 sts and work in pattern for 3 inches. Bind off. For flaps, cast on 24 sts and work straight for 1½ inches. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Find center of top of sleeve and mark with a pin. Measure off 2 inches on each side of pin, and mark. Then measure off 2 inches on each side of these last 2 pins, and mark. Remove center pin (4 pin marks in all). Make a ½ inch dart at each pin, taking off ½ inch on each side of pin and graduating it into nothing 1 inch from top edge. Sew darts on wrong side (thus making 4 darts). Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Sew on pockets and flaps as in illustration, curving the lower corners of pockets.
