BLOUSE
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 112 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2½ inches. Then work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter until there are 128 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 9 inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows; then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 94 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Hereafter, work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 40 sts remain. Bind off.
Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 124 sts and work as for Back until there are 144 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 9 inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows; then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 100 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 2¼ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, with wrong side of work toward you, k 1, p 1 alternately across 1st 46 sts, then k 8 (54 sts), turn (thus starting center front opening). Work back and forth over these 54 sts in ribbing of k 1, p 1, keeping the 8 sts at front opening in garter st, k 8 sts), and making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge after the 1st ½ inch and every 1½ inches thereafter until 3 buttonholes in all are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 2 sts; then, on next row, cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, to shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 3 sts every other row 9 times, at the same time—at front edge—bind off 8 sts once (thus starting neck shaping) and 3 sts at same edge every other row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of front opening, cast on 8 sts, and work opposite side to correspond, omitting buttonholes.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 48 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2½ inches. Then, work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter, until there are 88 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 14¾ inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, and 2 sts at beginning of each row thereafter until 52 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 14 sts remain. Bind off.
Collar. Starting at outside edge, cast on 120 sts and work in garter st (k each row) for 6 rows. Hereafter, work in stockinette st, keeping the 3 sts at both edges in garter st, working together the 4th and 5th sts at beginning of each row until 100 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 2½ inches in all. Bind off tightly. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar all around neck edge, having center front bands extend beyond edges of collar. Sew the 8 sts of center front band in place on wrong side. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
Embroidery. Measure off 1¼ inches in from center front band and, with contrasting color, make 3 lazy daisy stitches at base of yoke. Then, with second contrasting color, work a short stem stitch (see illustration). Continue embroidery across Front and Back, making a flower, as before, every 2 inches apart.
SKIRT
Starting at waist, cast on 240 sts, and work in stockinette st (k each rnd), increasing 8 sts at equal intervals on the 6th rnd and every 8th rnd thereafter until 304 sts are on needle. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches. * Then make another increase rnd as before. Work 8 rnds straight. Repeat from * until there are 384 sts on needle. Hereafter continue as before, but increasing 10 sts at equal intervals on every 7th rnd until there are 444 sts on needle. Work straight for 2 inches. Then work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for ½ inches. Bind off.
With crochet hook work a row of s c around top of skirt. Then, * ch 5, sl st in 7th rnd down from top on wrong side and 4 sts to left, ch 5, sl st in 8th st from last st at top edge. Repeat from * around. Run elastic through casing.
