Size 10 Years

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 5 balls (1 oz. balls) of main color, and 1 ball each of 2 contrasting colors referred to in directions as A and B.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3.
26 inches of belting.
A 5-inch slide fastener.

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, with main color, cast on 140 sts and * work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), for 2 inches. Next row: Attach color A and k 1 row, p 1 row. Following row: Pick up main color, and k 1 row, p 1 row. Break off. Next row: Attach color B and k 1 row. Following row: Attach main color and repeat from * decreasing 1 st at both ends of next row, and every 7th row thereafter, until piece measures 19 inches (90 sts). Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off.

Front. Starting at bottom, with main color, cast on 182 sts, and work as for Back until piece measures 6 inches (172 sts). Then, on next row k first 72 sts, bind off next 28 sts (for an inverted pleat), k remaining 72 sts. Hereafter, work in pattern over these 144 sts, decreasing as for Back until piece measures 19 inches (104 sts). Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off.

Stripes. Work vertical stripes in chain stitch, making 1 ch st in each stockinette st and having stripes 2 inches apart.

Sew up side seams, leaving a 5-inch opening at left side of waistline. Sew belting to waistline. Sew slide fastener along opening. Sew pleat in place on wrong side. Work a row of s c all around bottom of skirt.
