Size 14 Years

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 23 balls (1 oz. balls) and 2 balls of a contrasting color.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
Milward's circular knitting pin No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.
One 13-inch and one 5-inch slide fastener.
2 buttons.

Gauge: Dress: 9 sts make 1 inch; 11 rows make 1 inch. Jacket: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

DRESS

Blouse Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 122 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until there are 148 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 122 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 50 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 66 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, increasing 1 st at one side only (underarm side) every 6th row, keeping other edge straight (front edge) until there are 78 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm side, bind off 6 sts once and 3 sts every other row twice. Hereafter dec. 1 st at armhole edge, every other row until 58 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Starting at front edge, bind off 6 sts and continue across (thus starting neck shaping). Then bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 8 times; at the same time, when armhole measures same as armhole of Back, shape shoulder by binding off 4 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are worked off.

Left Front: Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 96 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there are 116 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 12 rows. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 22 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, cast on 144 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 increasing 12 sts (2 sts at a time) at equal distances apart, every 5th row until there are 216 sts on needle. (To increase, k 1, p 1, in each of 2 sts). Work straight until piece measures 3 inches. Then, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining sts. Work a row of s c all around outer edges of collar. Sew up underarm seams, leaving an opening of 2 inches at left side. Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar to neck edge. Sew slide fastener along both front edges.

Skirt. Start at bottom. With circular needle, cast on Start at bottom. With circular needle, cast on 468 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. On the next rnd work across 1st 234 sts, mark the last st with a safety pin. Work across remaining 234 sts and mark the last st with a safety pin. These 2 pins indicate the places where decreases are to be made. On next rnd and every 4th rnd thereafter dec. 1 st at both sides of each pin (4 sts decreased in rnds), until 316 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at both sides of each pin every 3rd rnd until 252 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 24 inches. Hereafter work in rows instead of rnds for 3 more inches, thus making a side opening. Sew skirt to blouse at waistline. Sew slide fastener along both sides of opening.

JACKET

Back. Starting at bottom, with main color, cast on 144 sts and * k 1 row, p 1 row, for 2 inches. Drop main color, attach contrasting color and k 1 row, p 1 row. Break off. Pick up main color and repeat from * until piece measures 8 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 104 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 40 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, with main color, cast on 46 sts and work as for Back, casting on 7 sts at end of each p row twice, and increasing 1 st every other row at same edge (this to be cut-away edge of Front), until there are 72 sts on needle. Work straight until underarm measures same as underarm of Back.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm side, bind off 10 sts and continue across. Then dec. 1 st every other row until 48 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Starting at front edge, bind off 4 sts and continue across. Next row: P across. Hereafter bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row until 32 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 4 sts every other row until all sts are worked off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, with main color cast on 64 sts and work in pattern increasing 1 st at both ends of every 8th row until there are 96 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 14¼ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 48 sts remain. Now bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 16 sts remain. Bind off.

Cuffs. Starting at bottom, with main color cast on 64 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row twice (68 sts). Work straight until piece measures 1¾ inches. Bind off.

Pockets. Starting at bottom, with main color cast on 26 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in.

Stripes. With contrasting color, work vertical stripes in chain st, making 1 ch st in each stockinette st, having stripes 2 inches apart and the first stripe 1 inch in from front edge. Sew cuffs to sleeves. Sew on pockets as in illustration. With main color work a row of s c all around edges of jacket. Fasten neck edge, with 2 buttons and a chain loop.
