MATERIAL:
3 (4-5) skeins Orlon Acrylic 2 ply (2 oz. skein)
small amount Orion Acrylic white for design
or
4 (5-6) skein Knitting Worsted or Orion Sayelle (2 oz. skein)
small amount of Knitting Worsted or Orion Sayelle white for design
1 pair knitting needles each No. 5 and No. 8
6 (6-7) buttons

GAUGE: 4 sts. = 1 inch

NOTE: When using Orion Acrylic, use 2 strands.
NOTE: Carry yarn not in use loosely on wrong side of work catching it when carried over more than 3 sts.

BACK:
Cast on 46 (50-54) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. (all sizes). Incr. 4 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and stock. st. and work even for 4 rows. Follow chart No. 967 for pattern. With 50 (54-58) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 8½ (9½-10½) inch, or any des. length to underarm. Shape raglan armhole: bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (all sizes). 1st row: K1, slip 1, K1, p.s.s.o., work to last 3 sts., K2 tog., K1. 2nd row: P back. Repeat these 2 rows 15 (17-19) times. Rem. 16 sts. (all sizes) bind off.

RIGHT FRONT:
NOTE: For boys work buttonholes in left front border. For girls work buttonholes in right front border.
Cast on 28 (30-32) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch, (all sizes), keeping the 5 center front sts. in ribbing K1, P1 for buttonhole border throughout the entire front. Incr. 4 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and stock. st. and work even for 4 rows. Follow chart No. 968. With 32 (34-36) sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Shape raglan armhole: bind off at armhole edge at the beg. of the next row 2 sts. and decr. for raglan as on back 15 (17-19) times and at the same time after 9 (11-13) raglan decr. are completed (there are 21 sts. (all sizes) on needle) bind off for neck 10 sts. (all sizes) at center edge and then decr. 1 st. at neck edge 3 times (all sizes) every other row. Rem. 2 sts. (all sizes) bind off.

LEFT FRONT:
Work as Right Front reversing all shapings and follow chart No. 968 for design. Work 6 holes evenly spaced apart in front border, placing first buttonhole ½ inch from beg. and last one 4 rows below neckline. (To make a buttonhole: K1, P1, bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts. of previous row.)

SLEEVE:
Cast on 28 (30-32) sts. with No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch, (all sizes). Incr. 2 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and stock. st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 6th row until 36 (40-44) sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 9 (9½-10½) inch, or any des. length to underarm. Shape raglan cap: bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. Decr. for raglan as on back 15 (17-19) times. Bind off rem. 2 sts. (all sizes).

FINISHING:

Sew up side and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves to front and back. Collar: With No. 5 needles cast on 52 (56-60) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 3 rows. Change to stock. st. keeping the first and last 3 sts. on needle in ribbing K1, P1. After 2 rows work the smaller elephant in first and last 12 sts. on needle inside the 3 border sts. as shown on chart No. 968. Work even for 6 rows. Bind off. Sew collar to neck edge. Sew buttons in place and block to size.
