Sizes 1—2 and 3 Yrs.

MATERIALS:
1 Pr. Size 8 Standard Knitting Needles
1 Pr. Size 10 Standard Knitting Needles
1 Yr.—3 2-oz. Skeins Extra Heavy Knitting Yarn
2 and 3 yr.—4 Skeins (app. 65 yds to a skein).
Size 8 Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 4 sts to 1 in.

Starting at neck edge, with size 10 needles cast on 38 sts (2 yr. 42 sts—3 yr. 46 sts). K 3 rows then K 3, P to within last 3 sts, K 3.

Start raglan seams as follows: Row 1—K 7, (2 yr. K 8—3 yr. K 9) (left front); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts (seam sts); K 2 (sleeve); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts (2nd seam); K 12 (2 yr. 14—3 yr. 16) (back); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts (3rd seam); K 2 (sleeve); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts (4th seam); K 7, (2 yr. K 8—3 yr. K 9) (right front).
Row 2 and all even rows—K 3, P to within last 3 sts, K 3.
Row 3—K 8 (2 yr. K 9—3 yr. K 10); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 4; inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 14 (2 yr. K 16—3 yr. K 18); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 4; inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 8 (2 yr. K 9—3 yr. K 10).
Row 5—K 9 (2 yr. K 10—3 yr. K 11); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 2, cross next 2 sts by knitting the 2nd st on left hand needle then K the first, drop both sts from needle tog. K 2; inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 16 (2 yr. K 18—3 yr. K 20); inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 2, cross next 2 sts, K 2; inc. 1 st in each of next 2 sts; K 9 (2 yr. K 10—3 yr. K 11).
Continue increasing 2 sts in each raglan seam as given above, having 1 more st in each front, 2 more in each sleeve and 2 more in the back, every other row, continuing to cross the 2 center sts of sleeves every 4th row to cuff.
When 12 increased rows (2 yr. 14 inc. rows—3 yr. 16 inc. rows) have been made, separate sleeve from remainder of cardigan as follows (there should be 134 sts on the needle for size 1 yr.—154 for size 2 yrs—174 for size 3 yrs.)

SLEEVE: Starting on right side, K 20 (2 yr. K 23—3 yr. K 26); place on st-holder. K 28 for sleeve (2 yr. 32—3 yr. 36); place remaining sts on 2nd st-holder.
Work back and forth in stockinette st crossing the 2 center sts as given, until sleeve measures 6 in. (2 yr. 7 in.—3 yr. 7½ in.) from under­arm or desired length to cuff. Change to size 8 needles and P 1 row (wrong side) decreasing to 24 sts (2 yr. 26 sts—3 yr. 28 sts). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 6 rows. Bind off. Join yarn at 2nd raglan seam; place sts from 2nd st-holder to needle and work across the 38 sts of back (2 yr. 44 sts—3 yr. 50 sts); place on st-holder.
Work across next 28 sleeve sts (2 yr. 32 sts—3 yr. 36 sts); place remaining sts on 3rd st-holder. Work 2nd sleeve as given for first.
Join yarn at 4th raglan seam; place the sts from 3rd st-holder to needle and work across right front. Turn. K 3, P to sleeve. Place sts of back to needle and P them. Place sts of left front to needle and P to within last 3 sts, K 3.
Keeping first and last 3 sts worked in garter st and remaining sts in stockinette st, work even until piece measures 5 in. (2 yr. 6 in.—3 yr. 6½ in.) or desired length from underarm to knitted waist band, ending with a K row. Change to size 8 needles and P 1 row decreasing 8 sts evenly across row; ending at left front edge. Cast on 6 sts. K 8 rows. Bind off.

FINISHING: Starting at neck edge of left front, work 1 row of s c, working buttonholes as fol­lows: 1 s c in first st, * ch 2, skip 1 ridge, 1 s c in each of next 4 ridges; repeat from * if you do not have the required number of ridges, to follow instructions be sure to space the but­tonholes (the ch of 2) evenly 4 times ending at point where the tab was added (see illustra­tion). Work 2 buttonholes across the end of the extension tab.
Work 1 row of s c across right front edge. Ch 1 turn. Work 1 more row of s c st for st for buttonhole band. Fasten off.
Sew sleeve seams.
