Sizes 1—2 and 3 Yrs.

MATERIALS:
1 Pr. Size 8 Standard Knitting Needles
1 Pr. Size 10 Standard Knitting Needles
1 Yr.—4 2-oz. Skeins Extra Heavy Knitting Yarn
2 and 3 yr.—5 Skeins (app. 65 yds to a sk.)
Size 8 Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 4 sts to 1 in.

BACK: With size 10 needles cast on 40 sts (2 yr. 44 sts—3 yr. 48 sts). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 6 rows then work in pattern as follows:
Row 1—(right side) * K 1, P 3; repeat from * across row.
Row 2—P 1, * K 1, P 3; repeat from * ending P 2.
Repeat above 2 rows until piece measures 6½ in. (2 yr. 7 in.—3 yr. 7½ in.) or desired length to underarm. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Work even until piece measures 3½ in. (2 yr. 4 in.—3 yr. 4½ in.) from underarm to shoulder. K 10, (2 yr. 11—3 yr. 12); place on st-holder. Work over next 12 sts (2 yr. 14 sts—3 yr. 16 sts) for back of neck; place on st-holder. On remaining sts, K 6 rows ending at neck edge.

FRONT: Keeping armhole edge even, work in pattern increasing 1 st at neck edge every other row 3 times. Cast on 3 sts (2 yr. 4 sts—3 yr. 5 sts) at neck edge. Work even in pattern until piece measures same as back from shoulder to underarm, measuring from center of the 6 K rows across shoulder.

Cast on 4 sts at underarm edge then work even in pattern until piece measures same as back from underarm to ribbing. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 6 rows. Bind off. Place sts of right shoulder from st-holder to needle and work right front to correspond to left.

SLEEVES: On right side of garment, with size 10 needles pick up 32 sts (2 yr. 36 sts—3 yr. 40 sts) across armhole edge, being sure to space sts evenly. Work in pattern until piece measures 6½ in. (2 yr. 7½ in.—3 yr. 8 in.) or desired length to cuff, ending on right side. Change to size 8 needles and P 1 row decreasing to 24 sts (2 yr. 26 sts—3 yr. 28 sts.) Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 8 rows. Bind off.
Sew sleeve and underarm seams.

FINISHING: Starting at neck edge of left front, work 30 s c (2 yr. 34 s c—3 yr. 38 s c) across front edge. Ch 1 turn. Work 2 more rows of s c st for st. Fasten off. Starting at lower edge of right front, work 1 row of s c across front edge as given for left front. Ch 1 turn. Work 1 s c in first st, * ch 1, skip 1 st (for button­hole) 1 s c in each of next 4 sts (2 and 3 yr. 5 sts); repeat from * to lower edge, Ch 1 turn. Work 1 s c in each st including the ch of 1. Fasten off.

NECKBAND: With size 8 needles on right side of garment, pick up 45 sts (2 yr. 47 sts—3 yr. 49 sts) across neck edge including sts from st- holder. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 3 rows. Bind off.
