MATERIAL:
2 skeins Sock yarn 3 ply, m. c. (1 oz. ball) for short socks
3 skeins Sock yarn 3 ply, m. c. (1 oz. ball) for long socks
1 skein Sock yarn 3 ply, 1st c. c. (1 oz. ball)
1 skein Sock yarn 3 ply, 2nd c. c. (1 oz. ball)
1 skein Sock yarn 3 ply, 3rd c. c. (1 oz. ball)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 1 and No. 2
1 set sock needles No. 2
2 stitch holders
1 card Nylon for heel and toe reinforcement
GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch
PATTERN:
1st row: m. c. K across row.
2nd row: m. c. P across row.
3rd row: 1st c. c. * K 3, slip 3 as if to P (carry yarn loosely in back), repeat from * across row.
4th row: 1st c. c. P 4 * slip 1 st. as if to P, P 5, repeat from * across row, end P 1.
5th row: 1st c. c. K across row.
6th row: 1st c. c. P across row.
7th row: 2nd c. c. * slip 3 sts. as if to P (carry yarn loosely in back), K 3, repeat from * across row.
8th row: 2nd c. c. P 1, * slip 1 st. as if to P, P 5, repeat from * across row, end P 4.
9th row: 2nd c. c. K across row.
10th row: 2nd c. c. P across row.
11th to 14th rows: 3rd c. c., like 3rd to 6th rows incl.
15th to 18th rows: m. c., like 7th to 10th rows incl.
Repeat from 3rd to 18th rows incl. for pattern.
With m. c. and No. 1 needles cast on 66 sts. and work back and forth in ribbing K 2, P 2 for 3 inch. Change to No. 2 needles and pattern, and work even until sock measures 7 inch, for short socks or 10 inch, for long socks, ending with 18th row. With m. c. work across 17 sts. and slip them to a holder, work across 33 sts. for instep and slip the rem. 16 sts. to a holder. Work over instep sts. only in pattern for 4 inch. Slip sts. to a sock needle (2nd needle). Heel: Slip the 17 sts. from one holder and the 16 sts. from the other holder to one needle for heel (make sure that center of heel is center of sock). Attach a ball of m. c. and Nylon. Start on right side and deer. 1 st. at beg. of row (there are now 32 sts. on heel needle). 1st row: * slip 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. 2nd row: P across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 28 rows. Now shape heel: (right side facing you) Slip 1, K 16, K 2 tog., K 1, turn. Slip 1, P 3, P 2 tog., P 1, turn. Slip 1, K 4, K 2 tog., K 1, turn. Slip 1, P 5, P 2 tog., P 1, turn. Slip 1, K 6, K 2 tog., K 1, turn. Continue to work this way having one more st. on each row until 18 sts. are left. Break yarn. Cut off Nylon. Right side facing you, pick up with m. c. and a sock needle 14 sts. on one side of heel. K across 9 Heel sts. (3rd needle). Take another sock needle, K the rem. 9 heel sts., pick up and K 14 sts. on other side of heel (1st needle). Work over 1st and 3rd needles only. 1st row: P back. 2nd row: K 1, slip 1, K 1, p.s.s.o. the K st., K to the last 3 sts. on 1st needle, K 2 tog., K 1. Repeat these 2 rows until there are 32 sts. on 1st and 3rd needles tog. Work as long as instep sts. Connect the 3 needles decr. 1 st. at the beg. of the 2nd needle (there are now 64 sts. in round), and work all around on sock needles until foot measures 8 inch, from back of heel for size 10; 8½ inch, for size 10½; 9 inch, for size 11; 9½ inch, for size 11½, or 2 inch, shorter than desired length. Start to deer, for toe: Attach Nylon. 1st round: K to within 3 sts. of first needle, K 2 tog., K 1. On 2nd needle, K 1, slip 1, K 1 and p.s.s.o. the K st., K to within 3 sts., K 2 tog., K 1. On 3rd needle, K 1, slip 1, K 1 and p.s.s.o. the K st. K to end. 2nd round: K around. Repeat these 2 rounds until 20 sts. are left. Weave sts. tog. Sew up back and side seams. Steam lightly.
