GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 11 rnds make 1 inch.

Pattern Stitch (a multiple of 8 sts) … With main color, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * around. Drop main color. Repeat this rnd, working 1 rnd of contrasting color, then 1 rnd of main color for stripe pattern.

Sizes 10-10½ (11-11½, 12-12½)

Starting at top with main color and No. 1 needles, cast on 64 sts loosely (for all sizes). Divide sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in rnds of k 2, p 2 ribbing for 1½ inches. Change to No. 2 needles and work in Pattern Stitch until piece measures in all 5" (5½", 6").

Break off contrasting color. With 4th needle knit 16 sts from 1st needle. Slip from 3rd needle onto other end of 4th needle the last 14 sts of previous rnd (4th needle is now 1st needle). Divide the remaining 34 sts between 2nd and 3rd needles for instep and knit across them. Next row: Drop yarn, then with a different color thread (for heel marker) knit across the 1st needle. Drop different color thread, go back and pick up yarn and, starting with 1st needle, work in stripe pattern as follows: Knit across 1st needle, work in Pattern Stitch across 2nd and 3rd needles—always change color at center of 1st (sole) needle—until piece measures from heel marker 5½" (6½", 7½"). Break off contrasting color.

With main color work straight in stockinette st for ½ inch, then slip 1 st from the beginning of the 2nd needle to the end of the 1st needle. Knit around to within last st on 3rd needle. Slip this 1 st onto beginning of 1st needle.

To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 1, slip 1 as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to within last 3 sts on 1st needle, k 2 together, k 1. On 2nd needle, k 1, slip 1 as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, continue to knit to within last 3 sts on 3rd needle, k 2 together, k 1. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until 24 sts remain. Weave sts together; or bind off, fold and sew.

HEEL … Pull out strand of different color thread, pick up sole sts on 1st needle (30 sts). Divide remaining 31 sts between 2nd and 3rd needles. Attach main color yarn at beginning of 1st needle and knit 1 rnd, picking up 2 sts between 1st and 2nd needles (1 st on each needle) and 2 sts between 3rd and 1st needles in same way. Work 3 rnds straight.

To Shape Heel: Work as for Toe Shaping until 25 sts remain. Weave sts together; or bind off, fold and sew.
