4 skeins of main color and about 7 yards each of 2 contrasting colors (to be referred to as A and B) for each size.

Royal Society Plastic Sock Needles, 1 set each of No. 1 and No. 2.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 10 rnds make 1 inch.

Sizes 10-10½ (11-11½, 12-12½)

With main color and No. 2 needles, cast on 60 sts (62 sts, 64 sts).

Divide sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Change to No. 1 needles and work around in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches for Slack-Length Socks or 4½ inches for Regulation-Length Socks, then knit 1 rnd, decreasing evenly around to 56 sts.

Change to No. 2 needles and work pattern as follows: Always twist yarns around each other when changing colors to prevent making a hole. 1st rnd: * Attach a 2-yard strand of A and k 1 A, k 26 M, attach a 2-yard strand of B and k 1 B. Repeat from * once more. 2nd rnd: K 1 M, k 1 A, k 24 M, k 1 B, k 2 M, k 1 A, k 24 M, k 1 B, k 1 M. 3rd rnd: K 2 M, k 1 A, k 22 M, k 1 B, k 4 M, k 1 A, k 22 M, k 1 B, k 2 M. 4th rnd: K 3 M, k 1 A, k 20 M, k 1 B, k 6 M, k 1 A, k 20 M, k 1 B, k 3 M.

Continue working contrasting color diagonal lines in this manner (attaching additional 2-yard strands as necessary) until piece measures 4½ inches in all for Slack-Length Socks, or 11½ inches in all for Regulation-Length Socks, ending on rnd where A and B lines meet.

HEEL … With spare needle knit 14 sts from 1st needle. Slip 14 sts of previous rnd from 3rd needle onto other end of spare needle. This is now heel needle. Divide the remaining 28 sts between 2nd and 3rd needles for instep. With main color only, work in rows of stockinette st (purl 1 row, knit 1 row) over heel needle—always slip the first st on each row and knit the last st on each purl row—for 23 rows.

To Shape Heel: (Right side facing) Slip 1 st, k 14 sts, k 2 together, k 1, turn. Next row: Slip 1 st, p 3 sts, p 2 together, p 1, turn. Following row: Slip 1 st, k 4 sts, k 2 together; k 1, turn. Next row: Slip 1 st, p 5 sts, p 2 together, p 1, turn.

Continue in this manner, always working 1 st more on each row until 16 sts remain. Knit 1 row. With an other needle (1st needle) pick up 14 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle work in pattern across all instep sts. With 3rd needle pick up 14 sts along other side of heel, then with same needle knit across half of the heel sts. Slip the remaining heel sts onto the 1st needle. There are 22 sts on each heel needle.

Decrease for instep as follows: 1st rnd: Knit across 1st needle, work in pattern across 2nd needle, knit across 3rd needle. 2nd rnd: On 1st needle, knit across to 3 sts from end, then k 2 together, k 1. Work in pattern across 2nd needle. On 3rd needle k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until 56 sts remain. Work straight over these sts (continuing pattern on instep sts) until piece measures from back of heel 7" (8½", 8½").

Discontinue diagonal lines and work straight with main color until piece measures from back of heel 8" (9", 10").

To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 1, slip 1 as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to within last 2 sts on 1st needle, k 2 together. On 2nd needle, k 1, slip 1 as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, continue to knit to within last 2 sts on 3rd needle, k 2 together. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until 20 sts remain.

Weave sts together or bind off, fold and sew.
