What You Need:
BEEHIVE SCOTCH FINGERING, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins).
3 skeins for each size.
Royal Society Plastic Sock Needles No. 1.
GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 11 rnds make 1 inch.
Sizes 10-10½ (11-11½, 12-12½).
Starting at top cast on very loosely 64 sts (68 sts, 72 sts).
Divide sts on 3 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts, and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 5 inches. Next rnd: Knit around, decreasing evenly around to 56 sts (60 sts, 64 sts).
Then work in stockinette st (knit each rnd) for ½ inch. Now work clock as follows: 1st rnd: Knit 11 sts (12 sts, 13 sts) then p 1, k 4, p 1, knit 22 sts (24 sts, 26 sts) then p 1, k 4, p 1, knit 11 sts (12 sts, 13 sts).
2nd rnd: Knit around. 3rd rnd: Knit 11 sts (12 sts, 13 sts) then p 1, make a cable—to make a cable, slip next 2 sts onto 5th needle and leave at back of work; knit next 2 sts, knit sts from 5th needle. P 1, knit 22 sts (24 sts, 26 sts) p 1, make a cable, p 1, knit 11 sts (12 sts, 13 sts). 4th, 5th and 6th rnds: Repeat 2nd, 1st and 2nd rnds respectively. 7th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd. 8th to 12th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rnds alternately. Repeat these 12 rnds 4 more times. Then work 1st to 9th rnds inclusive once more. Piece measures 11½ inches in all. Discontinue clock pattern.
HEEL … With spare needle knit from 1st needle 14 sts (15 sts, 16 sts). Slip from 3rd needle onto other end of spare needle (for heel) the last 14 sts (15 sts, 16 sts) of previous row. This is now heel needle.
Divide between 2nd and 3rd needles (for instep) the remaining 28 sts (30 sts, 32 sts).
Turn and work over heel needle only as follows: 1st row: Slip 1 st, p 1 alternately across. 2nd row: Slip 1 st, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 25 rows.
To Shape Heel: (Right side facing) Slip 1 st, knit 14 sts (16 sts, 16 sts) k 2 together, k 1, turn.
Slip 1 st, purl 3 sts (5 sts, 3 sts) p 2 together, p 1, turn.
Slip 1 st, knit 4 sts (6 sts, 4 sts) k 2 together, k 1, turn.
Slip 1 st, purl 5 sts (7 sts, 5 sts)
p 2 together, p 1, turn.
Continue in this manner, always working 1 st more on each row until there remain 16 sts (18 sts, 18 sts).
Knit 1 row. With another needle (1st needle) pick up 16 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle knit across all instep sts. With 3rd needle pick up 16 sts along other side of heel, then with same needle knit across half of the heel sts. Slip the remaining heel sts onto the 1st needle. There are now on each heel needle 24 sts (25 sts, 25 sts).
Decrease for instep as follows: 1st rnd: Knit around. 2nd rnd: On 1st needle knit to 3 sts from end, then k 2 together, k 1. Knit across 2nd needle. On 3rd needle k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain 56 sts (60 sts, 64 sts).
Work straight until piece measures (from back of heel) 8" (9", 10") or about 2 inches less than desired length when completed.
To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: Knit to last 2 sts on 1st needle, then k 2 together. On 2nd needle, k 2 together, knit across to last 2 sts, then k 2 together. On 3rd needle k 2 together, then knit to end. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain 20 sts (24 sts, 24 sts).
Weave sts together; or bind off, fold and sew.
