MATERIALS:
Here are attractive woollies to keep your baby warm and snug. The original test model was knitted with Beehive Fingering 4 ply Patonised. Other test garments were knitted satisfactorily with Patwin 4 ply Patonised. To obtain the measurements and tension required by these instructions, so that your set will look exactly like the one shown, be sure to buy your choice of one of these specified yarns. You will need:—10 ozs. for the Set (4 pieces). If made separately, the Coat takes 4 ozs. Leggings 4 ozs. Bonnet 1 oz. Mitts 1 oz. Two No. 12 and two No. 10 Queen Bee Knitting Needles. One spare needle with points at both ends. 5 Buttons. For your information, other styles of Legging Sets for which wools specified in these instructions may be used, will be found in Beehive Books No. 41 and No. 50A.
MEASUREMENTS: Coat—To fit 19½-20 inch Chest. Length from top of shoulder 12½ ins. Sleeve seam 7 ins. Leggings—Length of front seam ins. Length of leg seam (including foot) 10½ ins. Width all round 24 ins. Bonnet—Width all round face edge 13 ins. Depth 7 ins.
Tension: 7½ . sts. and 10 rows = 1 inch with No. 10 needles.

THE COAT
BACK: With No. 10 needles cast on 92 sts.
Before proceeding, please read "Important Information" on patternbook page.
Knit 6 rows Garter st. (plain knitting every row).
Beginning with purl row, continue even in Stocking st. until work measures ins. from beginning ending with purl row.
Cast off 2 sts. beginning next 2 rows for armholes (88 sts. on needle) then work 6 rows even ending with purl row.
To make opening for yoke: K38. (K2tog. K1) 3 times K2tog. K39. (84 sts. on needle).
Next row: K1. P37. Cast off 8 sts. P37. K1.
Working on last 38 sts. proceed:—
**1st row: Knit to last 6 sts. (K2tog.) 3 times.
2nd row: Cast off 3 sts. purl ways. Purl to last st. K1. Repeat these 2 rows to 2 sts. on needle. Cast off.**
With right side of work facing join wool to remaining 38 sts. and knit to end of row. Proceed:—
***1st row: K1. Purl to last 6 sts. (P2tog.) 3 times.
2nd row: Cast off 3 sts. Knit to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows to 2 sts. on needle. Cast off.***
LEFT FRONT: With No. 10 needles cast on 48 sts.
Knit 6 rows Garter st.
Beginning with purl row, but keeping 4 sts. in Garter st. at beginning of each purl row for front border, continue even in Stocking st. until work measures 8 ½ ins. from beginning, ending with purl row.
Next row: Cast off 2 sts. for armhole. Knit to end of row.
Next row: Cast off 8 sts. at front edge. Purl to last st. K1. (38 sts. on needle).
Repeat from ** to ** as given for Back.
RIGHT FRONT: With No. 10 needles cast on 48 sts.
Knit 6 rows Garter st.
Beginning with purl row, but keeping 4 sts. in Garter st. at end of each purl row for front border, continue even in Stocking st. until work measures 8½ ins. from beginning, ending with knit row.
Next row: Cast off 2 sts. for armhole. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
Next row: Cast off 8 sts. at front edge. Knit to end of row. (38 sts. on needle).
Repeat from *** to *** as given for Back.
LEFT SLEEVE: With No. 12 needles cast on 32 sts.
Knit 15 rows Garter st.
16th row: K2. *Inc. 1 st. in next st. K2. Repeat from * to end of row. (42 sts. on needle)
Change to No. 10 needles and beginning with purl row, continue in Stocking st. inc. 1.st. each end of needle every 6th row to 56 sts. on needle.
Continue even until sleeve measures 7 ins. from beginning or desired length, ending with purl row.
Cast off 2 sts. beginning next 2 rows (52 sts. on needle) then work 13 rows even ending with knit row. Proceed:—
To shape top: 1st row: Cast off 2 sts. purlways. Purl to last st. K1.
2nd row: Knit to last 16 sts. (K2tog.) 8 times.
3rd row: Cast off 8 sts. purlways. Purl to last st. K1.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows to 2 sts. on needle. Cast off.
RIGHT SLEEVE: With No. 12 needles cast on 32 sts. and work exactly as given for Left Sleeve to 52 sts. on needle then work 12 rows even ending with purl row.
Substituting knit rows for purl rows and purl rows for knit rows, shape top as given for Left Sleeve.
YOKE: With No. 12 needles cast on 28 sts. Knit 5 rows Garter st. Change to No. 10 needles.
6th row: (4 buttonholes which are worked at both ends of the yoke, so that the coat may be used for a Girl or a Boy. When making up, it is a very simple matter, when sewing on the buttons, to draw up the buttonholes not being used, to close them). K3. (Wl.fwd. K2tog. for buttonhole. K6) twice. Wl.fwd. K2tog. K1. Inc. 1.st. in each of next 2 sts. K2. Wl.fwd. K2tog. (30 sts. on needle).
7th row: K3. P6. K21.
8th row: Knit.
9th row: K3. P6. K21. Proceed in pattern for remainder of yoke:—
**(The figures given in brackets are the ones to use when working the Bonnet).
1st row: Knit to last 9 sts. Slip next 3 sts. onto needle with points at both ends, letting this needle fall to back of work. Knit next 3 sts. Bring the 3 sts. forward and knit them. K3.
2nd row: K3. P6. K1. Turn.
3rd row: Having wool at front of work, slip 1st. st. off right hand needle onto left hand needle. Take wool to back of work and slip the slipped st. back onto right hand needle. When turning always slip the 1st. st. from right hand needle in this manner to prevent a hole. Knit to end of row.
4th row: K3. P6. K9. (B.—K3. P6. K5). Turn.
5th row: Sl.1. Knit to end of row.
6th row: K3. P6. K17. (B.— K3. P6. K9). Turn.
7th row: Sl.1. Knit to end of row.
8th row: K3. P6. Knit to end of row.
Repeat these 8 rows until the 1st. row has been worked for the 39th time in all, thus ending at longer edge.
Next row: K3. P6. K21.
Next row: (4 buttonholes). K3. (Wl.fwd. K2tog. K6) twice. Wl.fwd. K2tog. K1. (K2tog.) twice. K2. Wl.fwd. K2tog. (28 sts. on needle).
Change to No. 12 needles. Knit 5 rows Garter st. Cast off loosely.
COLLAR: With No. 10 needles cast on 72 sts. Knit 20 rows Garter st. Cast off.
TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves evenly in armholes. Matching each cast-off st. to a ridge at longer edge of yoke, sew in position. Placing collar in line with buttonholes, sew cast-off edge around neck. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
THE LEGGINGS
RIGHT LEG: With No. 10 needles cast on 76 sts.
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st. row 3 times.
5th row: (eyelets). K2. *Wl.fwd. K2tog. P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 2 sts. Wl.fwd. K2tog.
Repeat 1st. row 11 times. Proceed:—
To shape back: 1st row: K8. Turn.
2nd and alternate rows: Slip 1st. st. from right hand needle as
given in Yoke of Coat, see page 20. Purl to last st. K1.
3rd row: K16. Turn.
5th row: K24. Turn.
7th row: K32. Turn.
9th row: K40. Turn.
11th row: K48. Turn.
12th row : As 2nd row.
Working over all 76 sts. continue in Stocking st. inc. 1.st. at long side of work (back seam) on next and every following 6th row to 86 sts. on needle.
Continue even until work measures 8½ ins. from cast-on edge at short side (front seam) ending with purl row.
To shape leg: Continue in Stocking st. dec. 1.st. each end of needle on next and every alternate row to 54 sts. on needle, then every 4th row to 42 sts. on needle.
Continue even until edge of leg measures 9 ins. or desired length ending with purl row.
To make foot: (The figures given in brackets are the ones to use
when working the Left Leg).
1st row: K35. (L.L.— K19). Turn.
2nd row: K12. Turn.
Working on these 12 sts. knit 29 rows Garter st. (plain knitting every row).
Next row: Pick up and knit 15 sts. along side of toe flap. Knit remaining 7 sts. (L.L.—23 sts.).
Next row: K34. (L.L.— K50). Pick up and knit 15 sts. along other side of toe flap. Knit remaining 23 sts. (L.L.—7 sts.). (72 sts. on needle).
Knit 14 rows Garter st. Proceed:—
1st row: K6. (L.L.— K26). (K2tog.) twice. K32. (K2tog.) twice. Knit to end of row. Knit 1 row.
3rd row: K5. (L.L—K25). (K2tog.) twice. K30. (K2tog.) twice. Knit to end of row. Knit 1 row.
5th row: K4. (L.L.— K2U). (K2tog.) twice. K28. (K2tog.) twice. Knit to end of row. Knit 1 row.
7th row: K3. (L.L.— K23). (K2tog.) twice. K26. (K2tog.) twice. Knit to end of row. Cast off.
LEFT LEG: Reversing the shaping for back by substituting purl rows for knit rows and knit rows for purl rows, work to correspond to Right Leg.
TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew all seams. For the cord, using wool double, crochet a chain 34 ins. long. Darn in ends. Thread through eyelets at waist.
THE MITTS
With No. 10 needles cast on 36 sts.
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st. row for 2 ins.
Next row: (eyelets). K2. *Wl.fwd. K2tog. Repeat from * to end of row.
Beginning with purl row, continue even in Stocking st. until work measures 5 ins. from cast-on edge ending with purl row.
Next row: *K1. K2tog. Repeat from * to end of row. Purl 1 row.
Next row: (K2tog.) 12 times. Purl 1 row. Break wool. Thread end through remaining sts. Draw up and fasten securely. Sew seam. Press lightly. For the cord, using wool double, crochet a chain 15 ins. long. Darn in ends. Thread through eyelets at wrist. Make another mitt to correspond.
THE BONNET
SIDES: With No. 12 needles cast on 22 sts.
Next row: K3. P6. K13.
Beginning at ** as given in Yoke for Coat, see page 20 and noting required changes for Bonnet, work the following 1st. to 8th rows inclusive.
Repeat these 8 rows until 1st. row has been worked for the 21st time in all, then work the following 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th rows once more, ending at longer edge.
Cast off 3 sts. knitways, 6 sts. purl ways and remaining 13 sts. knitways.
Gather shorter edge into a firm circle and sew cast-on edge to cast- off edge. Press lightly. Make other side to correspond.
CENTER PIECE: Beginning at front, with No. 12 needles cast on 18 sts.
Knit 5 rows Garter St. (plain knitting every row).
6th row: K3. *Inc. 1.st. in next st. K4. Repeat from * to end of row. (21 sts. on needle).
Change to No. 10 needles and beginning with purl row, continue even in Stocking st. until work measures 8¼ ins. from beginning ending with purl row.
Next row: Knit to 3 center sts. Sl.1. K2tog. p.s.s.o. Knit to end of row.
Purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row.
Repeat these last 4 rows to 13 sts. on needle.
Change to No. 12 needles. Knit 5 rows Garter st. Cast off loosely. (back of piece).
CHIN STRAP: With No. 12 needles cast on 26 sts. Knit 2 rows Garter st.
3rd row: K2. (K2tog. Wl.fwd. for buttonhole). Knit to end of row.
Knit 2 rows Garter st. Cast off loosely.
TO MAKE UP: Placing the back of the center piece to the seams of the sides sew evenly in position. There should be about 33 ridges of the sides left free. Sew chin strap to one side and buttonhole to correspond on other.
