Mohawk Valley Afghan Pattern

Knitted in two colors, this Fair Isle throw is ideal for a den or game room.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 8 skeins of No. 848 Skipper Blue and 7 skeins of No. 676 Emerald Green.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 7 and No. 8.

Afghan measures 55 x 72 inches … Each end strip measures 16¾ x 72 inches, center strip measures 21½ x 72 inches.

GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches; 5 rows = 1 inch.

NOTE: When changing colors, twist the unused color around the other to pre­vent making holes. Carry yarn not in use loosely in back of work. Pattern is worked in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) except for side borders and unless otherwise indicated.

RIGHT END STRIP … Starting at narrow edge with No. 7 needles and Blue, cast on 76 sts. 1st through 5th row: K across. 6th row (wrong side): P across to within last 3 sts, k 3 for side border. Change to No. 8 needles. 7th row: With Blue k 5, attach Emer­ald, * with Emerald k 1, with Blue k 3. Repeat from * across, ending with Blue k 2 (instead of k 3). 8th row: * With Blue p 1, with Emerald p 3. Repeat from * across, ending with Blue p 1, k 3.
   Knit the last 3 sts on every p row and the first 3 sts on every k row with Blue for garter st border. These 3 sts are not indicated on chart. Chart shows one complete pattern. Work every row from A to B 3 times, then work last st same as first st (this st is not indicated on chart).
   Starting with 9th row, follow chart until the 32nd row has been com­pleted. Change to No. 7 needles. 33rd and 34th rows: Repeat 5th and 6th rows. 35th through 38th row: With Blue k across. 39th row: With Blue k 3, with Emerald k across to end of row. 40th row: With Emerald k across to within last 3 sts, with Blue k 3. 41st through 43rd row: Repeat 39th, 40th and 39th rows. 44th row: With Emer­ald p across to within last 3 sts, with Blue k 3. Change to No. 8 needles. Starting with 45th row, follow chart until the 70th row has been completed. Change to No. 7 needles. 71st and 72nd rows: Repeat 39th and 44th rows. 73rd through 76th row: Repeat 39th and 40th rows alternately. Repeat first through 76th row 4 times more; then repeat first through 37th row once more. Bind off in knitting on wrong side.

LEFT END STRIP … Work same as Right End Strip until the 5th row has been completed. 6th row: K 3, p across. Change to No. 8 needles. 7th row: With Blue k 2, attach Em­erald, * with Emerald k 1, with Blue k 3. Repeat from * across, ending with Blue k 5 (instead of k 3). 8th row: With Blue k 3 for side border; p 1,* with Emerald p 3, with Blue p 1. Repeat from * across. Position of side border has been established. Knit the first 3 sts on every p row and the last 3 sts on every k row with Blue for garter st border. Starting with 9th row, follow chart from A to B 3 times, working last st (not indicated on chart) same as first st. Complete to correspond with Right End Strip.

CENTER STRIP … Starting at narrow edge with No. 7 needles and Blue, cast on 97 sts. Work same as previous strips until the 5th row has been com­pleted. 6th row: P across (no side border). Change to No. 8 needles. Starting with 7th row, follow chart from A to B 4 times, working last st (not indicated on chart) same as first st. Complete to correspond with previous strips, ending with same row of pat­tern. Bind off in knitting on wrong side.
   Block each strip to measurements. Sew strips together lengthwise, match­ing patterns.
