No. 600 – Men's Slack Socks

REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 2-ounces of 3-ply Sock Yarn (Tan); ½-ounce each of Yellow and Green 3-ply Sock Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr #2 single pointed

GAUGE: 7 sts to an inch.

   STARTING AT THE CUFF: With the tan yarn, cast on 64 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1½-inches. NEXT ROW: Knit 2 sts together; knit 28 sts; knit 2 sts together; place the remaining sts onto a stitch holder. Turn. Row 1: Slip 1 st; purl to end of row. Row 2: Knit 2 sts together, knit across to within last 2 sts; knit 2 to­gether. Repeat these last 2 rows until all sts are decreased. Place the 32 sts from st holder onto the needle and do as the first piece.
   FIRST HALF DIAMOND: With the right side of the work facing you, tie green yarn at the first decrease. Pick up 1 st in same place, pick up 1 st on corresponding row of tan, (always pick up sts through the 2 loops between each knot made by decreases). Turn. Slip first st; purl back. Turn. Knit across; pick up 1 st on tan diamond. Repeat these last 2 rows until there are 16 sts picked up along tan diamond; purl back. Next knit row: Knit to within last two sts, knit 2 together. Turn; slip first st, purl to end of row. Repeat these last 2 rows until all sts are decreased.
   CENTER DIAMOND: Using the yellow, pick up 2 sts on the right side of the work in space between decreases, turn. Slip 1 st, p 1, insert needle from right side of work, pick up 1 st on edge of tan, turn. Slip 1 st; knit 2; pick up st on corresponding row of tan, turn. Continue in this manner picking up a stitch at end of each row, until there are 32 sts picked up. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the diamond on every knit row until all sts are decreased.
   END HALF DIAMOND: With the wrong side of the work facing you, tie green yarn at first decrease. Pick up a stitch in the same place, pick up 1 st on corresponding row of tan. Work this ½-diamond to correspond to first one, (picking up sts at end of purl row and when time to decrease knit the first 2 sts together at the begin­ning of a knit row).
   BACKGROUND: Tie tan yarn in 2nd space, between yellow and green diamonds, and work as center diamond until you have 32 sts on the needle, ending with a knit row. Break yarn. Place these sts onto a stitch holder. Now tie tan yarn in space between green and yellow diamond. Work as center diamond until you have 32 sts on the needle, ending with a knit row. Purl back. Knit across these 32 sts; knit the 32 sts off stitch holder. Purl across next row. Heel: Knit 16 sts, place the remaining sts onto a st holder. Turn. 1st row: Slip first st; purl to end of row. 2nd row: Knit across row. Repeat these last 2 rows until 29 rows have been made, ending with a purl row.
   SHAPING OF HEEL: K 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 3, turn; k 3, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 4, turn; k 4, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 5, turn; k 5, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 6, turn; k 6, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 7, turn; k 7, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 8, turn; k 8, slip 1, k 1, psso, (9 sts). With the same needle, pick up and knit 14 sts along side of heel; knit 32 sts from stitch holder; place all these sts from needle onto a free stitch holder; knit the last 16 sts from st holder onto the needle. Work on these sts in stockinette stitch, always slipping the first st on a knit row, until 28 rows have been made, ending with a knit row.
   SHAPING OF HEEL: P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 3, turn; p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 4, turn; p 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 5, turn; p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 6, turn; p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 7, turn; p 7, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 8, turn; p 8, p 2 tog, (9 sts). With the same needle, pick up and purl 14 sts along side of heel; place a marker on the needle; purl 32 sts from st holder; place a 2nd marker on the needle; purl the remaining 23 sts.
   GUSSET DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, knit 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; knit across 32 sts; slip marker; k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Purl across next row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 56 sts remain on the needle. Drop off marker. Now work even in stockinette stitch until the sock measures (8-inches for size 10) or 2-inches shorter than the length needed, ending with a purl row. Next row: Purl 14 sts; place a marker on the needle; purl 28 sts; place a marker on the needle; purl the remaining 14 sts.
   TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, knit 2 tog, knit 1, slip marker; k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker; k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, slip 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Purl across next row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 24 sts remain on the needle. Bind off. Sew across toe, having decreases at the sides. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.
   DIAGONAL STRIPES: Using a worsted needle, thread with red yarn. * Insert needle from wrong to right side through center of stitch and draw yarn through. Insert needle from right to left through top of stitch drawing yarn under double strand of stitch (loosely). Then insert needle through center of stitch once more, thus completely covering the original stitch. Repeat from * on a diagonal line as in illustration.

 

No. 610 – Men's Slack Length Socks

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of Tan Sport Yarn; ½-ounce each of Green and Yellow Sport Yarn
NEEDLES: 1-pr #2 single pointed

GAUGE: 7 sts to an inch.

   SOCKS: Follow instructions as for pattern #600. Omitting the diagonal stripes.
