These directions are for Size 10 to 12. Changes for Sizes 14 to 16 and 18 to 20 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Columbia-Minerva Calibar (2 oz skein) - 28(30-32) skeins

OR

Columbia-Minerva Nylon and Wool Calibrette (2 oz skein) - 25(27-28) skeins

3 ½ yards lining material
Knitting Needles: 1 pair "Boye" Size 10 - 14 inch
Gauge: 4 sts to 1 inch; 5 rows to 1 inch (pat st); 3 ½ sts to 1 inch (St St)

PATTERN STITCH: (Multiple of 6 sts plus 1) Row 1: (Wrong side of work) K 2, *P 3, K 3, repeat from * across row, ending P 3, K 2. Row 2: P 2, *yarn in back of work sl 1 as if to P, K 1, yo, K 1, psso the last 3 sts, P 3, repeat from * across row, ending P 2 instead of 3. Row 3: Same as Row 1. Row 4: P 2, *K 3, P 3, repeat from * across row, ending P 2, instead of 3. Row 5: Same as Row 1. Row 6: Same as Row 2. Repeat Rows 3 through 6 for pat (crossing sts every 4th row).

Coat is written for 42 ½”(43”-43 ½”) length from back of neck to lower edge, including 3 inches allowed for blocking. For shorter or longer length make changes before first dec.

BACK: Starting at lower edge, cast on 103(109-121) sts. Work in pat, working even for 16 inches, ending on wrong side of work. Next row dec across row by dec'ing 1 st in first P 3 rib, then every 3rd P 3 rib 5(5-6) times more - 97(103-114) sts on needle. Work even for 4 inches in established pat (working 2 P sts in P ribs where decs were made). On next row, on right side of work, dec 1 st in first P 3 rib, then every 3rd P 3 rib 4(5-5) times more - 92(97-108) sts on needle. When work measures 24 inches from start, ending on wrong side of work, dec 1 st in each rem P 3 ribs - 87(92-102) sts on needle. On Size 18 to 20 only, dec 4 sts when work measures 26 inches from start by dec'ing 1 st in the first two and last two P ribs - 98 sts on needle. On all Sizes: when work measures 28 inches from start, To Shape Armholes: Bind off 12 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times - 57(62-68) sts on needle. When armholes measure 4 ½”(5”-5 ½”) from bound-off sts at underarm, inc 1 st in 4th P 2 rib, then in each of the next 5(6-6) P 2 ribs, work to end of row in pat as before - 63(69-75) sts on needle. Continue in pat as established. When armholes measure 9 ½”(10”-10 ½”), measured straight from bound-off sts at underarm, To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 4(4-5) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then bind off 5(6-6) sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off rem sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Starting at lower edge, cast on 55(61-67) sts. Work in pat, working even until work measures same as Back to underarm. To Shape Armhole: Bind off 15 sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times. When armhole measures 1 ½ inches, measured straight, sl 6 sts at front edge onto st holder for neck border, then dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 9(7-7) times, then every other row 0(5-6) times AND AT THE SAME TIME when armhole measures 3 inches, measured straight, dec 1 st in each P 3 rib across row - dec'ing 4(5-6) sts and when armhole measures 4 ½ inches, on Size 18 to 20 only dec 1 st again in the 2 P ribs toward neckline. Work in pat as established until armhole measures same as at Back. To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 4(4-5) sts at armhole edge every other row 2 times, then bind off 5(6-6) sts at same edge every other row 2 times. Place markers for 3 buttons at front edge, having 3rd marker 2 inches below neck edge, then 2nd and first markers 11 inches apart.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with Left Front, working buttonholes to correspond with markers as follows: Work across first 6 sts at front edge, sl rem sts onto st holder. Work back and forth in pat on these 6 sts for 2 inches, ending on right side of work. Sl these sts onto 2nd st holder, break yarn. Sl rem sts of Front onto needle, join yarn at start of row on right side of work and continue in pat for 2 inches, ending on wrong side of work, then K 3, P 3, from st holder. Work 2nd and 3rd buttonhole in same manner.

SLEEVES: Starting at top of Sleeve, cast on 25 sts. Work in pat, casting on 3(3-2) sts at end of next 4(8-2) rows, then cast on 4(0-3) sts at end of next 2(0-8) rows. Inc 1 st each side every other row 3 times, then cast on 12 sts at end of next 2 rows 75(79-83) sts on needle. Continue in pat as established, dec'ing 1 st each side every 6th row 4 times 67(71-75) sts on needle. Work 6 rows even. *Dec 1 st each side as before and dec 1 st in the P 3 rib nearest each side edge, repeat from * every 2 inches until all P ribs are dec'd - 47(51-51) sts on needle. Work even until Sleeve measures 17”(17”-17 ½”), measured straight from the 12 cast-on sts at underarm. Bind off all sts.

FRONT FACINGS AND COLLAR: Starting at lower edge for Left Front Facing, cast on 14 sts. Work in reverse St St (P side will be right side of work) for 2 inches less than length of front edge of Coat to first neck dec. Place marker on needle for start of Collar, then inc each side at the same time as follows: Next row inc 1 st at inside edge (end of P row), then every 1 inch 9 times more and inc 1 st at outside edge (beg of P rows) every 2 inches 5 times AND AT THE SAME TIME when Collar measures 4 inches from marker work a "short row" as follows: Work to within 8 sts of inside edge, inc 1 st in next st, turn. Sl the inc'd st. Work to outside edge of Collar. Next row K the inc'd st of previous row tog with the next st to prevent hole. Repeat "short row" every 1 inch 7 times more. When Collar measures 12 ½”(13”-13 ½”) from marker, bind off 9 sts at inside edge, work to end of row. Working on the 20 sts only, work "short rows" as before every 1 inch 3 times, working to within 5 sts of inside edge. Work a "short row" on each of the next 2 P rows by working to within 10 sts, then 16 sts of inside edge. Run a basting marker through next row to mark center back of neck. Work other side of Collar and Facing to correspond, work buttonholes in Facing to correspond with buttonholes in Right Front.

Pin Collar and Facing to Fronts. Sl the 6 sts from st holder of Front onto needle and continue cable and P pat (reversing sts) to fit outside edge of Collar to center back of neck. Bind off. Work cable and P pat of other Front in same manner. Weave or sew seam at center back.

HEMS: Cast on 91(95-105) sts for hem of Back. Work in reverse St St for 1 inch, bind off. Cast on 49(51-58) sts for each hem of Fronts and work in reverse St St for 1 inch, bind off. Cast on 41(45-49) sts for hem of each Sleeve and work in reverse St St for 1 inch, bind off.

If lining is desired, before sewing garment tog cut material, using pieces as Pattern allowing for seams. Sew shoulder seams. Sew hems in place. Sew Facings to Fronts and Collar to back of neck. Sew cable pat to edge of Collar. Turn under the 2 P sts at edge and sew. Face Collar with lining material. Sew around buttonholes. Sew Sleeves in place. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. If desired, sew tape across shoulder seams and at back of neck. Sew lining in place.
