These directions are for Size 12. Changes for Sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Skylark Sports Yarn (2 oz skein) - 8(9-10-11) skeins
Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 3 and 4 - 14 inch
Gauge: 9 ½ sts to 2 inches; 14 rows to 1 inch (pat st - Size 4 needles)
1 "Boye" Aluminum Crochet Hook "F" (Size 3 or 4)
BACK: With Size 3 needles cast on 109(113-121-125) sts. Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: P 1, *K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 ¼ inches, ending on wrong side of work and dec'ing 28(28-30-30) sts evenly across last row - 81(85-91-95) sts on needle. Change to Size 4 needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) K 1, *insert needle into next st below loop of previous row and K, K 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: K 2, *insert needle into st below loop of previous row and K, K 1, repeat from * across, ending K 2. Repeat these 2 rows until work measures 14”(14”-14 ½”-14 ½”), or desired length from start to underarm. To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4(4-5-5) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 5 times - 63(67-71-75) sts on needle. When armholes measure 8”(8 ½”-8 ½”-9”), measured straight from bound-off sts at underarm, To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 6(6-7-7) sts at beg of next 4(2-6-4) rows, then bind off 7(7-0-8) sts at beg of next 2(4-0-2) rows. Bind off rem 25(27-29-31) sts for back of neck.
LEFT FRONT: With Size 3 needles cast on 53(55-58-60) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 ¼ inches, ending on wrong side of work, dec'ing 10(10-9-9) sts evenly across last row - 43(45-49-51) sts on needle. Change to Size 4 needles and work in pat same as for Back. When front edge measures 13 ¼”(13 ¾”-14 ¼”-14 ¾”) from start, To Shape Neck: Dec 1 st at front edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every 4th row 2(3-7-10) times more, then every 6th row 11(11-9-7) times AND AT THE SAME TlME when work measures same as Back to underarm, To Shape Armhole: Bind off 5(5-6-6) sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 5 times.
When armhole measures same as at Back, To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 6(6-7-7) sts at armhole edge every other row 2(1-3-2) times, then bind off 7(7-0-8) sts every other row 1(2-0-1) times. Place markers for 4 buttons at front edge, having first marker 1 ½ inches from start and 4th marker at first neck dec.
RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with Left Front, reversing shaping and working buttonholes to correspond with markers as follows: (Right side of work) Work 4 sts, bind off next 4 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 4 sts over the bound-off sts.
SLEEVES: With Size 3 needles cast on 58(60-62-64) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 1 ¾ inches, ending on wrong side of work and dec'ing 11 sts evenly across last row - 47(49-51-53) sts on needle. Change to Size 4 needles and work in pat as for Back, inc'ing 1 st each side every 2 inches 5 times, being careful to keep pat even - 57(59-61-63) sts on needle. When work measures 15 ½ inches, or desired length from start to underarm, To Shape Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every 4th row 20(21-21-22) times. Bind off rem 11(11-13-13) sts.
LEFT FRONT FACING: With Size 4 needles cast on 10 sts. Work in St St until work measures same as front edges and around neck edge to center back of neck. Bind off. Place markers for 4 buttons at front edge same as on Cardigan.
RIGHT FRONT FACING: Work same as for Left Front Facing, working buttonholes to correspond with markers as follows: (Right side of work) K 2, bind off next 4 sts, K last 4 sts. On next row cast on 4 sts over the bound-off sts.
COLLAR: LOOP ST PATTERN: Ch desired length. Row 1: *With yarn over left index finger, insert hook into st and draw yarn from under finger through st (forming about a ¾ inch loop), remove finger and hold loop to left side, yo hook and through the 2 loops on hook, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn. Row 2: 1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn. Repeat these 2 rows for pat.
LEFT HALF OF COLLAR: Ch 8. Work in loop st pat, inc'ing 1 st each side every other row 8 times (on sc rows). Place a marker at beg of row for inside edge. Inc 1 st at outside edge every other row 4 times more - 27 sts AND AT THE SAME TIME when 20 rows are completed, start short rows at outside edge as follows: Work across to within last 8 sts, ch 1, turn. Work 6 rows even, then repeat the short row. *Work 6 rows even, then work short row to within last 10 sts. Repeat from * 2 times more. Then work 4 rows even instead of 6 rows 3 times more. Work even until inside edge measures 13 ½”(13 ¾”-14”-14 ¼”). Break yarn and fasten.
RIGHT HALF OF COLLAR: Work same as for Left Half, reversing shaping.
Sew shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves in place. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew facings in place, working around buttonholes and weave or sew facing tog at back of neck. Join the 2 halves of Collar by sewing seam at center back. Sew seam binding around entire Collar. Sew ½ of snap fasteners at inside edge of Collar and the other half of snap fasteners at inside of Cardigan to correspond. Cardigan can be worn with or without Collar as desired.
