These directions are for Size 14. Changes for Sizes 16, 18 and 20 are in parentheses.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 oz skein) - 5(5-6-6) skeins
OR
Columbia-Minerva Calypso Germantown Knitting Worsted (2 or 4 oz skein) 22(24-26-26) ozs
Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 5 and 7 - 14 inch and 1 "Boye" cable needle
Gauge: 5 ½ sts to 1 inch; 7 rows to 1 inch (pat st - Size 7 needles)
1 "Boye" Steel Crochet Hook Size 2
PATTERN STITCH: (Multiple of 12 sts plus 4) Row 1: (Right side of work) P 4, *sl next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold in back of work, K next 2 sts, then K the 2 sts from cable needle (back twist), sl next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold in front of work, K next 2 sts, then K the 2 sts from cable needle (front twist), P 4, repeat from * across row. Row 2: K 4, *P 8, K 4, repeat from * across row. Row 3: P 4, *K 8, P 4, repeat from * across row. Rows 4 through 11: Same as Rows 2 and 3. Row 12: Same as Row 2. Repeat these 12 rows for pat.
BACK: With Size 5 needles cast on 100(106-110-116) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 1 ½ inches. Change to Size 7 needles and start pat as follows: Row 1: For Size 14: K 2, front twist cable on next 4 sts, P 4. For Size 16: P 1. For Size 18: P 3. For Size 20: K 2, P 4. On all Sizes: Repeat from * of Row 1 of pat across row. Row 2: P 6, K 4 (K 1, P 8, K 4 - K 3, P 8, K 4 - P 2, K 4), repeat from * of Row 2 of pat across row. Continue pat in this manner. When work measures 13 ½”(13 ½”-14”-14”), or desired length from start, To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 4 times - 80(86-90-96) sts on needle. When armholes measure 7 ½”(8”-8”-8 ½”), measured straight from bound-off sts at underarm, To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 6(7-8-8) sts at beg of next 2(4-6-2) rows, then bind off 7(8-0-9) sts at beg of next 4(2-0-4) rows. Bind off rem sts for back of neck.
FRONT: Work same as Back until work measures 9 ½”(10”-10 ½”-11”) from start, ending on wrong side of work. To Shape Front Opening: Work across 46(49-51-54) sts, sl these sts onto st holder, bind off next 8 sts and on rem sts work Right Front as follows: When work measures same as Back to underarm, To Shape Armhole: Bind off 6 sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 4 times 36(39-41-44) sts on needle. When armhole measures 6”(6 ½”-6 ½”-7”), measured straight, To Shape Neck: Bind off 4(5-5-6) sts at front opening, then bind off 3 sts at same edge every other row 2 times, then bind off 2 sts every other row 3 times AND AT THE SAME TIME when armhole measures same as at Back, To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 6(7-8-8) sts at armhole edge every other row 1(2-3-1) times, then bind off 7(8-0-9) sts at same edge every other row 2(1-0-2) times. Work Left Front to correspond.
SLEEVES: With Size 5 needles cast on 52(54-56-58) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 1 ½ inches. Change to Size 7 needles and start pat as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) P 4(5-6-7), repeat from * of Row 1 of pat across, ending twist cables, P 4(5-6-7). Continue pat in this manner, inc'ing 1 st each side every 1 inch 9(9-10-10) times, working added sts in P pat - 70(72-76-78) sts on needle. When work measures 13 ½ inches, or desired length from start, To Shape Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row until 26(22-30-26) sts rem. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4(2-6-4) rows, then bind off rem sts.
RIGHT FRONT BAND: On right side of work, starting at lower edge with Size 5 needles pick up and K 60 sts at right front neck opening. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 14 rows, working 4 buttonholes on Row 7 as follows: (Starting at neck edge) Work 5 sts, *bind off 4 sts, work 10 sts, repeat from * 2 times more, bind off 4 sts, work 9 sts. Next row cast on 4 sts over each set of bound-off sts. When the 14 rows of ribbing have been completed, bind off in ribbing.
LEFT FRONT BAND: Starting at neck edge, work to correspond with right front band, omitting buttonholes.
Face front bands with grosgrain ribbon, working around buttonholes. Sew shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves in place. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew lower edge of bands in place, having left front band as underlap. Work 1 row of sc around neck edge.
