Boy's Sleeveless Pullover Pattern

MATERIALS:
The original pullover as shown was knitted with P & B Superior Double Knitting, Patonised and to assure yourself of the same satisfactory results, do be careful to use this wool. You will need: 4 ozs. (4 and 6 yrs.—6 ozs.). Two No. 10 and two No. 8 Queen Bee Knitting Needles. Two Stitch Holders.

Tension: 5 sts. = 1 inch and 15 rows = 2 ins. with No. 8 needles. Be sure to work to this tension.
The instructions are written for size 2 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 4 and 6 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

This pullover is worked up the front and down the back without seams at shoulders.
Beginning at lower edge of Front with No. 10 needles cast on 52 sts. (4 yrs.—56 sts.) (6 yrs.—58 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Im­portant Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit.
Work 2 ins. (4 yrs.—2 ins.) (6 yrs.—2½ ins.) ribbing (K1. P1) inc. 1. st. at end of last row for sizes 4 and 6 yrs. 52 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—57 sts.) (6 yrs—59 sts.).
Change to No. 8 needles and continue even in Stocking st. until work from beginning measures 7½ ins. (4 yrs.—8 ins.) (6 yrs.—8½ ins.) or desired length, ending with knit row.

To shape armholes and neck: 1st row: K7. Purl to last 7 sts. K7. (all sizes).
2nd row: Knit. Repeat these 2 rows twice.
7th row: Cast off 3 sts. K4. Purl to last 7 sts. K7.
8th row: Cast off 3 sts. Knit to end of row.
9th row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4. 46 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—51 sts.) (6 yrs.—53 sts.).
10th row: K4. K2tog. K13. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K4. Turn.
(4 yrs.—K4. K2tog. K15. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K1. K2tog. K2. Turn)
(6 yrs.—K4. K2tog. K16. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K1. K2tog. K2. Turn).
Leaving remaining 21 sts. (4 yrs.—23 sts.) (6 yrs.—24 sts.) on st. holder and working on these 23 sts. (4 yrs.—25 sts.) (6 yrs.—26 sts.), proceed:—
1st row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
2nd row: K4. K2tog. Knit to end of row.
3rd row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
4th row: Knit to last 6 sts. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K4.
(4 and 6 yrs.—K4. K2tog. Knit to last 6 sts. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K4). 21 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—22 sts.) (6 yrs.—23 sts.).
Keeping armhole edge even, continue dec. 1. st. inside border at neck edge every 4th row as before to 16 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—16 sts.) (6 yrs.—17 sts.).
Continue even until work from cast-on edge measures 12½ ins. (4 yrs.—13½ ins.) (6 yrs.—14½ ins.), ending with knit row. Tie coloured thread at armhole edge to mark shoulder line. Work 4 rows even ending at neck edge.
Next row: K4. Turn. Leave remaining sts. on st. holder.
Working on these 4 sts. knit 1¼ ins. (4 yrs.—1¾ ins.) (6 yrs.—1¾ ins.) even in Garter st. for half of border for back of neck. Cast off.
Slip the 21 sts. (4 yrs.—23 sts.) (6 yrs.—24 sts.) from 1st. st. holder onto No. 8 needle. With right side of work facing join wool at neck edge and cast on 4 sts. Knit these 4 sts. K2tog. Knit to last 6 sts. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K4. 23 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—25 sts.) (6 yrs.—26 sts.). Proceed:—
1st row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
2nd row: Knit to last 6 sts. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K4.
3rd row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
4th row:
K4. K2tog. Knit to end of row. (4 and 6 yrs.—K4. K2tog. Knit to last 6 sts. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o. K4).
21 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—22 sts.) (6 yrs.—23 sts.).
Keeping armhole edge even, continue dec. 1. st. inside border at neck edge every 4th row as before to 16 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—16 sts.) (6 yrs.—17 sts.).
Continue even until work measures same length as other side ending with purl row at neck edge.
Next row: K4. Turn. Working on these 4 sts. knit 1¼ ins. (4 yrs.—1¾ ins.) (6 yrs.—1¾ ins.) even in Garter st. for other half of border. Cast off.
With right side of work facing join wool to the 12 sts. (4 yrs.—12 sts.) (6 yrs.—13 sts.) of the side just worked. Cast on 18 sts. (4 yrs.—21 sts.) (6 yrs.—21 sts.) for back of neck. Turn work around and working across the 12 sts. (4 yrs.—12 sts.) (6 yrs.—13  sts.) from st. holder, purl to last 4 sts. K4. 42 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—45 sts.) (6 yrs.—47 sts.).
Next row: Knit.
Next row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4. Repeat these 2 rows until armhole from shoulder line measures same as Front to last armhole decreasing on Front ending with purl row.

To shape armholes: 1st row: K3. Inc. 1. st. in next st. Knit to last 5 sts. Inc. 1. st. in next st. K4.
2nd row: K4. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
Repeat these 2 rows to 46 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—51 sts.) (6 yrs.—53 sts.)  ending with 1st. row.
Next row: Cast on 3 sts. K7. Purl to last 4 sts. K4.
Next row: Cast on 3 sts. Knit to end of row. 52 sts. on needle. (4 yrs—57 sts.) (6 yrs—59 sts.).
Next row: K7. Purl to last 7 sts. K7.
Next row: Knit. Repeat last 2 rows twice, (all sizes).
Beginning with purl row, continue even in Stocking st. until work measures same as Front to top of ribbing, dec. 1. st. at end of last row for sizes 4 and 6 yrs.
Change to No. 10 needles and work 2 ins. (4 yrs.—2 ins.) (6 yrs.—2½ ins.) ribbing (K1. P1). Cast off loosely in ribbing.

TO MAKE UP: Press carefully. Sew the cast-off edges of the neck borders together and sew across back of neck. Sew the 4 cast-on sts. in position on wrong side of front of neck. Sew side seams.
