Girl's Mushroom Beret Pattern

MATERIALS:
Our models of this beret were knitted with P & B Superior Double Knitting, Patonised. This wool, firmly knitted as given in the instructions has the "body" needed to preserve the mushroom effect. 2 ozs. are required for sizes 2 and 4 yrs. (6 and 8 yrs.—4 ozs.). Also two No. 8 Queen Bee Knitting Needles.

HEAD SIZE: 20 to 20¾ ins. to fit 2 and 4 years. 20¾ to 21¼ ins. to fit 6 and 8 years.

Tension: 5 sts. = 1 inch and 15 rows = 2 ins. in Stocking st.

Beginning at top of crown cast on 10 sts. for all sizes.
1st row: Inc. 1. st. in each of the 10 sts. (20 sts. on needle). Knit 1 row.
3rd row: (K1. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 1 row.
5th row: (K2. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 1 row.
7th row: (K3. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 3 rows.
11th row: (K4. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 1 row.
13th row: (K5. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 3 rows.
17th row: (K6. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 1 row.
19th row: (K7. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 3 rows.
23rd row: (K8. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 1 row.
25th row: (K9. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 3 rows.
29th row: (K10. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. Knit 1 row.
31st row: (K11. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. 130 sts. on needle.
Proceed for size 6 and 8 yrs. only:—Knit 3 rows even.
Next row: (K12. Inc. 1. st. in next st.) 10 times. 140 sts. on needle.
Proceed for all sizes:—Knit 13 rows even.
Next row: *K3. K2tog. Repeat from * to end of row. Knit 1 row.
Next row: *K2. K2tog. Repeat from * to end of row. Knit 1 row.

To make headband: Beginning with knit row, work 7 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row.
Knit 1 row to turn hem.
Beginning with knit row, work 4 rows even in Stocking st.
Cast off loosely enough to allow this edge to fit easily around head. Sew up back seam. Turn the last 4 rows of headband, under at the knit row to form a hem and sew in position. Turn the whole hem under to wrong side and tack lightly in position about ½ inch from face edge.
