Boy's Cowboy Jacket Pattern

MATERIALS:
Our jacket was knitted with P & B Speedwell, Quick Knit Wool and used 6 ozs. Main Colour (B). 2 ozs. Contrasting Colour (A). (4 yrs.—8 ozs. (B). 4 ozs. (A).) (6 yrs.—8 ozs. (B). 4 ozs. (A).) (8 yrs.—10 ozs. (B). 4 ozs. (A).). We also made models with Beehive Caressa and the same quantities were required for each size. So that you can produce the tension re­quired for this Speedknit, be careful that you use one or other of these two wools. You will also need: Two No. 6 and two No. 4 Beehive Knitting Needles. 6 Buttons.

Tension: 4 sts. = 1 inch and 11 rows = 2 ins. with No. 4 needles in Stocking st.
The instructions are written for size 2 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 4, 6 and 8 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

BACK: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 43 sts. (4 yrs.—47 sts.) (6 yrs.—49 sts.) (8 yrs—53 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Im­portant Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit.
Work 5 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row. Knit 1 row for hemline.
Change to No. 4 needles and beginning with knit row, continue even in Stocking st. until work from hemline measures 8½ ins. (4 yrs.—9 ins.) (6 yrs.—9½ ins.) (8 yrs.—10 ins.) or desired length, ending with purl row.

To shape armholes: Cast off 2 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—3 sts.) (8 yrs.—4 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then dec. 1. st. each end of needle on following 3 rows. 33 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—35 sts.) (6 yrs.—37 sts.) (8 yrs.—39 sts.), ending with knit row.
Change to No. 6 needles and knit 1 row.
With right side of work facing, join (A) wool and proceed in pattern for yoke:—
1st row: With (A), K1. *Insert point of right hand needle from front to back of work through the st. below the next st. on left hand needle. Knit this st. in the ordinary way, pulling the loop through to front of work onto right hand needle, then dropping the st. above off the left hand needle. Working a st. in this manner will be termed "Knit below" throughout. P1. Repeat from * to last 2 sts. Knit below. K1.
2nd row: With (A), knit. Do not break (A), but carry the (A) and (B) wools up side of work.
3rd row: With (B), K1. *P1. Knit below. Repeat from * to last 2 sts. P1. K1.
4th row: With (B), knit. These 4 rows complete one pattern. Continue even in pattern until armhole from first shaping measures 4½ ins. (4 yrs.—5 ins.) (6 yrs.—5½ ins.) (8 yrs.—6 ins.).

To shape shoulders: Keeping continuity of pattern, cast off 5 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—5 sts.) (8 yrs.—6 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then 5 sts. (4, 6 and 8 yrs.—6 sts.) beginning following 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 21 sts. (4 yrs—23 sts.) (6 yrs.—25 sts.) (8 yrs—27 sts.).
Work 5 rows even in Stocking st. ending with knit row. Knit 1 row for hemline.
Change to No. 4 needles and beginning with knit row, continue even in Stocking st. until work is same length as Back to armhole ending with purl row.

To shape armhole: Cast off 3 sts. (4 yrs.—3 sts.) (6 and 8 yrs.—5 sts.) beginning next row. Purl 1 row even, then dec. 1. st. at armhole edge every row 3 times ending with knit row. 15 sts; on needle. (4 and 6 yrs.—17 sts.) (8 yrs.—19 sts.).
Change to No. 6 needles and knit 1 row.
With right side of work facing, join (A) wool and proceed in pattern for yoke as given for Back until armhole from first shaping measures 3½ ins. (4 yrs.—3¾ ins.) (6 yrs.—4 ins.) (8 yrs.—4¼ ins.) ending at front edge.

To shape neck: Keeping continuity of pattern, cast off 3 sts. (all sizes) beginning next row, then dec. 1. st. at neck edge every row to 10 sts. on needle. (4 and 6 yrs.—11 sts.) (8 yrs.—12 sts.). Continue even in pattern until armhole measures same as Back to shoulder, ending at armhole edge.

To shape shoulder: Keeping continuity of pattern cast off 5 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—5 sts.) (8 yrs.—6 sts.) beginning next row. Work 1 row even. Cast off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT: Work exactly as given for Left Front being careful to have all shapings for opposite side.

BORDER FOR LEFT FRONT: With right side of work facing, join (A) wool at neck edge and with No. 6 needles pick up and knit 50 sts. (4 yrs.—53 sts.) (6 yrs.—56 sts.) (8 yrs.—59 sts.) along front edge to the knit row marking hemline.
1st row: Knit, ending at neck edge.
2nd row: (buttonholes). K2. *Wl.fwd. K2tog. K6. Repeat from * to end of row.
(4 yrs. as 2 yrs. to last 3 sts. K3)
(6 yrs.—K2. *Wl.fwd. K2tog. K7. Repeat from * to end of row)
(8 yrs. as 6 yrs. to last 3 sts. K3.).
Knit 2 rows. Cast off.

BORDER FOR RIGHT FRONT: With right side of work facing, join (A) wool at the knit row marking hemline. With No. 6 needles pick up and knit 50 sts. (4 yrs.—53 sts.) (6 yrs.—56 sts.) (8 yrs.—59 sts.) along front edge to neck. Knit 4 rows Garter st. Cast off.

SLEEVES: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 19 sts. (4 yrs.—21 sts.) (6 yrs.—23 sts.) (8 yrs.—25 sts.).
Knit 1 row. Join (A) wool and work 2 complete patterns as given for yoke of Back. (4 yrs.—2 patterns) (6 and 8 yrs.—3 patterns), then work 1st., 2nd and 3rd rows once more. Break (A) wool.
Next row: P2. (4 yrs.—P3.) (6 yrs.—P4.) (8 yrs.—P5.) Inc. 1. st. purlways in each of next 14 sts. Purl to last st. K1. 33 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—35 sts.) (6 yrs.—37 sts.) (8 yrs.—39 sts.).
Change to No. 4 needles and beginning with knit row, continue even in Stocking st. until sleeve from beginning measures 9 ins. (4 yrs.—11 ins.) (6 yrs.—13 ins.) (8 yrs.—14 ins.) or desired length, ending with purl row.

To shape cap: Dec. 1. st. each end of needle on next and every alternate row 6 times, then every row to 11 sts. on needle, (aft sizes). Cast off.

COLLAR: With (A) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 2 sts. (all sizes).
1st row: Inc. 1. st. in 1st. st. K1.
2nd row: K1. Inc. 1. st. in next st. K1.
3rd row: K1. Inc. 1. st. in next st. Knit to end of row.
4th row: Knit to last 3 sts. Inc. 1. st. in next st. K2.
Repeat 3rd and 4th rows to 10 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—10 sts.) (6 and 8 yrs.—12 sts.).
Knit even in Garter st. until shorter side of work measures 8 ins. (4 yrs.—8¼ ins.) (6 yrs.—8½ ins.) (8 yrs.—8¾ ins.) ending at shorter side.
Next row: K2. K2tog. Knit to end of row.
Next row: Knit to last 4 sts. K2tog. K2. Repeat last 2 rows to 4 sts. on needle. Next row: K1. K2tog. K1.
Next row: K1. K2tog.
Next row: K2tog. Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Darn in all ends. Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew shorter edge of collar around neck. Turn hems under on the knit row and sew in position. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.

To make fringe: Wind (A) wool over a piece of cardboard 2¼ ins. wide and cut through one edge thus making pieces 4½ ins. long. Taking 2 strands together, double them, and using a crochet hook, draw a loop through a (B) st. at beginning of yoke on front. Pass the ends through the loop and knot firmly. Repeat at even distances along the yoke at front as illustrated and similarly along the back.
