Boy's Toque Pattern

MATERIALS:
This is a very economical toque to knit when you use Beehive Caressa or P & B Speedwell, Quick Knit Wool. 2 ozs. of the Main Colour of either wool are sufficient when you use up your oddments for the stripes, otherwise 4 ozs. will be required for a toque in one colour. You will also need: Two No. 5 Beehive Knitting Needles.

HEAD SIZE:   20 to 21 ins. to fit 2, 4 and 6 years. 21 to 22 ins. to fit 8, 10 and 12 years.

Tension: 4½ sts. and 6 rows = 1 inch in Stocking st.

With Main Colour, cast on 68 sts. for 2, 4 and 6 yrs. 72 sts. for 8, 10 and 12 yrs. Due to the elasticity of the knitting, the toque will stretch to fit the head sizes as given above.
1st row: *K2. P2. Repeat from * to end of row. Repeat 1st. row until there are 4 ribbed rows in all.
Using oddments, continue in ribbing, working 2 rows with stripe colour and 4 rows with Main Colour, alternately, until work from cast-on edge measures 8 ins. for 2, 4 and 6 yrs.—9 ins. for 8, 10 and 12 yrs., or desired length.
Continuing with Main Colour, proceed:—
1st row: *K2tog. P2tog. Repeat from * to end of row.
2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: *K1. P1. Repeat from * to end of row.
5th row: (wrong side of work). *P2tog. Repeat from * to end of row.
6th row: *K2tog. Repeat from * to last st. K1. For 8, 10 and 12 yrs. repeat from * to end of row. Break wool. Thread end through remaining sts. Draw up and fasten securely. Sew up back seam. Make and sew a pom-pom to top. For making pom-pom, see patternbook page.
