Girl's Bolero with Kimona Sleeves Pattern

MATERIALS:
The original bolero was knitted with Beehive Caressa and used 4 ozs. (4 yrs.—4 ozs.) (6 and 8 yrs.—6 ozs.) (10 yrs.—8 ozs.) (12 yrs.—10 ozs.) and we also made models in P & B Speedwell, Quick Knit Wool, using 4 ozs. (4 and 6 yrs.—6 ozs.) (8 yrs.—8 ozs.) (10 yrs.—10 ozs.) (12 yrs.—12 ozs.). To assure satis­factory results with your knitting, be careful to use only one or other of these two wools. You will also need: Two No. 4 Beehive Knitting Needles. One Large Crochet Hook. One Button. Approx. 1 oz. Contrasting Colour of Caressa or Speedwell for trimming, if desired.

Tension: 4 sts. = 1 inch and 11 rows = 2 ins. in Stocking st. It is most important to work to this tension to obtain a satisfactory garment.
The instructions are written for size 2 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 4 to 12 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

Note:—This bolero is knitted with kimona sleeves, so there are no seams on the shoulders.

Beginning at lower edge of Back, cast on 40 sts. (4 and 6 yrs.—44 sts.) (8 yrs—48 sts.) (10 yrs—52 sts.) (12 yrs—56 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the ''Im­portant Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit.
1st and 2nd rows: *K2. P2. Repeat from * to end of row.
3rd row: Cast on 2 sts. *K2. P2. Repeat from * to end of row. Repeat 3rd row to 88 sts. on needle. (4 yrs.—100 sts.) (6 yrs.—108 sts.) (8 yrs—124 sts.) (10 yrs—136 sts.) (12 yrs—148 sts.).
Proceed:—
1st and 2nd rows: *P2. K2. Repeat from * to end of row.
3rd and 4th rows: *K2. P2. Repeat from * to end of row.
These 4 rows complete one pattern.
Work 2 more complete patterns then 1st. row of next pattern. Work now measures approx. 7 ins. from beginning.

(6 yrs.—Work 3 more complete patterns then 1st. row of next pattern. Work now measures approx. 9 ins. from beginning)
(8 yrs.—Work 3 more complete patterns then 1st. row of next pattern. Work now measures approx. 10 ins. from beginning)
(10 yrs.—Work 3 more complete patterns then 1st. 2nd and 3rd rows of next pattern. Work now measures approx. 11 ins. from beginning)
(12 yrs.—Work 4 more complete patterns then 1st. row of next pattern. Work now measures approx. 12 ins. from beginning).

To shape neck: Work 38 sts. in pattern. Cast off 12 sts. Work 38 sts. in pattern.
(4 yrs.—Work 44 sts. in pattern. Cast off 12 sts. Work 44 sts. in pattern)
(6 yrs.—Work 47 sts. in pattern. Cast off 14 sts. Work 47 sts. in pattern)
(8 yrs.—Work 55 sts. in pattern. Cast off 14 sts. Work 55 sts. in pattern)
(10 yrs.—Work 60 sts. in pattern. Cast off 16 sts. Work 60 sts. in pattern)
(12 yrs.—Work 66 sts. in pattern. Cast off 16 sts. Work 66 sts. in pattern).

Working on last group of sts. and leaving remaining sts. on spare needle, work 9 rows even in pattern ending at neck edge. (4 yrs.—11 rows) (6 and 8 yrs.—13 rows) (10 yrs.—15 rows) (12 yrs.—17 rows).
With another ball of wool, onto the free needle cast on 6 sts. (4 yrs.—6 sts.) (6 and 8 yrs.—9 sts.) (10 and 12 yrs.—10 sts.). Break wool.
Using needle with shoulder sts. work in pattern across these sts. Sts. for half of front of neck are now in position. Work 9 rows even in pattern (all sizes) ending at cuff edge.
**Next row: (side edge). Cast off 2 sts. Work in pattern to last 2 sts. K2tog. (front edge).
Next row: Work even in pattern.
Repeat these 2 rows to 17 sts. on needle. (4 and 6 yrs.—17 sts.) (10 and 12 yrs.—13 sts.).
Dec. 1. st. at front edge every row, at same time continue casting off 2 sts. at side edge every alternate row, as before to 5 sts. on needle, (all sizes). Cast off.**
Join wool at neck edge to sts. on spare needle.
Work 8 rows even in pattern, ending at neck edge and casting on 6 sts. at end of last row.
(4 yrs.—Work 10 rows even in pattern, ending at neck edge and casting on 6 sts. at end of last row)
(6 yrs.—Work 12 rows even in pattern, ending at neck edge and casting on 9 sts. at end of last row)
(8 yrs. as 6 yrs.)
(10 yrs.—Work 14 rows even in pattern, ending at neck edge and casting on 10 sts. at end of last row)
(12 yrs.—Work 16 rows even in pattern, ending at neck edge and casting on 10 sts. at end of last row).
Work 11 rows even in pattern (all sizes) ending at cuff edge. Repeat from ** to ** as given for other side.

TO MAKE UP: Press lightly. Sew side seams. Work 1 row s.c. around each cuff. Beginning at right side seam, work in s.c. along right front edge to within ½ inch of neck. Ch. 3 for button­hole. Miss about ⅜ inch and work 1. s.c. at corner of neck. Con­tinue in s.c. around remainder of neck, other front edge and lower edge of back. Fasten off. If desired, with a contrasting colour, work 1. s.c. in each s.c. of previous row, working 2 s.c. in the buttonhole loop. Trim cuffs similarly. Sew button to correspond to buttonhole.
