Boy's Zippered Cardigan Pattern

MATERIALS:
To check the accuracy of these instructions for size, tension, stitch detail etc. we knitted some of our garments with P & B Speedwell, Quick Knit Wool and used 10 ozs. Main Colour (B). (10 yrs.—10 ozs.) (12 yrs.—12 ozs.). 2 ozs. Contrasting Colour (A). (all sizes). We knitted other garments with Beehive Caressa and used 8 ozs. Main Colour (B). (10 and 12 yrs.—10 ozs.). 2 ozs. Contrasting Colour (A). (all sizes). If you will be careful to use one or other of these two wools, you will be sure that you can knit a garment exactly as shown in the picture. You will also need: Two No. 6, two No. 4 and two No. 3 Beehive Knitting Needles. One 14-inch "Zipper" Fastener. (10 yrs.—14-inch) (12 yrs.—16-inch).

Tension: 4 sts. = 1 inch and 11 rows = 2 ins. with No. 4 needles in Stocking st. Be sure to work to this tension to obtain the size of garment you require.
The instructions are written for size 8 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 10 and 12 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

RIGHT FRONT: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 31 sts. (10 yrs.—33 sts.) (12 yrs.—35 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Im­portant Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit.
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows of ribbing for 3 ins. (10 and 12 yrs.—31 ins.) ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 3 needles and proceed:—
1st row: (right side of work). With (B), purl across row.
Join (A) wool. Do not break (B) wool, but carry the colours up side of work, from one stripe to next.
2nd row: (this is side edge of work on Right Front and front edge of work on Left Front). With (A), P1. *Keeping (A) to front of work, Sl.1. purlways. P1. Repeat from * to end of row.
3rd row: With (A), P1. *Pass (A) between needles to back of work. Sl.1. purlways. Bring (A) to front of work. P1. Repeat from * to end of row.
4th row: With (B), purl across row.
These 4 rows complete one pattern.
Continue even in pattern, being sure that the width of front is 6¾ ins. (10 yrs.—7¼ ins.) (12 yrs.—7¾ ins.), until work from be­ginning measures 10½ ins. (10 yrs.—11 ins.) (12 yrs.—11½ ins.) or desired length, ending at side edge.

To shape armhole: Keeping front edge even and keeping con­tinuity of pattern, cast off 2 sts. (all sizes) beginning next and every alternate row to 23 sts. on needle. (10 and 12 yrs.—25 sts.).
Continue even in pattern until armhole from first shaping measures 3½ ins. (10 yrs.—3½ ins.) (12 yrs.—4 ins.) ending at front edge.

To shape neck: Keeping armhole edge even and keeping con­tinuity of pattern, cast off 6 sts. (all sizes) beginning next row, then dec. 1. st. at neck edge every row to 13 sts. on needle. (10 and 12 yrs.—15 sts.).
Continue even in pattern until armhole from first shaping measures 5½ ins. (10 yrs.—6 ins.) (12 yrs.—6½ ins.). Cast off.

LEFT FRONT: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 31 sts. (10 yrs.—33 sts.) (12 yrs.—35 sts.) and continue to correspond to Right Front being careful to have all shapings for opposite side.

BACK: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 51 sts. (10 yrs.—55 sts.) (12 yrs.—59 sts.).
Work the same number of rows in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Right Front, ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 4 needles and continue even in Stocking st. until work measures same as Right Front to armhole ending with purl row.

To shape armholes: Cast off 3 sts. (all sizes) beginning next 2 rows, then dec. 1. st. each end of needle every row to 41 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—43 sts.) (12 yrs.—45 sts.).
Continue even in Stocking st. until armhole measures same as Right Front to shoulder ending with purl row.

To shape shoulders: Cast off 6 sts. (10 and 12 yrs.—7 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then 6 sts. (all sizes) beginning following 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

SLEEVES: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 27 sts. (10 yrs.—29 sts.) (12 yrs.—31 sts.).
Work 2¾ ins. (10 and 12 yrs.—3 ins.) in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Right Front, ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 4 needles and proceed:—
1st row: K8. (10 yrs.—K9) (12 yrs.—K10) *Inc. 1. st. in next st. K8. Repeat from * once. Knit to end of row. 29 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—31 sts.) (12 yrs.—33 sts.).
Beginning with purl row, continue in Stocking st. inc. 1. st. each end of needle on 4th row then every following 8th row to 41 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—43 sts.) (12 yrs.—45 sts.). Continue even in Stocking st. until sleeve from beginning measures 14 ins. (10 yrs.—15 ins.) (12 yrs.—16 ins.) or desired length, ending with purl row.

To shape cap: Continue in Stocking st. dec. 1. st. each end of needle on next and every alternate row twice, then every row to 11 sts. on needle, (all sizes). Cast off remaining sts.

NECKBAND: With (B) wool and No. 6 needles cast on 49 sts. (10 yrs—55 sts.) (12 yrs.—61 sts.).
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
3rd row: K2tog. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. P1. Sl.1. K1. p.s.s.o.
Repeat 3rd row until there are 6 rows. (10 yrs.—7 rows) (12 yrs.—8 rows) in all. Cast off loosely in ribbing. The cast-on edge is the outside edge of neckband.

TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew all seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew shaped edge of neckband around neck. Sew in "Zipper" fastener.
