Boy's Sleeveless Cardigan Pattern

MATERIALS:
Our colourful cardigans were knitted with P & B Superior Double Knitting, Patonised and by being careful to use this wool, you will be able to obtain the same satisfactory results. You will need: 4 ozs. Main Colour (B) and 4 ozs. Contrasting Colour (A). (all sizes). Two No. 10 and two No. 8 Queen Bee Knitting Needles. 7 Buttons. One Safety Pin.

Tension: 5 sts. = 1 inch and 15 rows = 2 ins. with No. 8 needles. For correct size be sure to use only the wool given above and work to this tension exactly.
The instructions are written for size 8 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 10 and 12 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

This cardigan is worked in one piece to armholes.
With (B) wool and No. 10 needles cast on 131 sts. (10 yrs.—141 sts.) (12 yrs.—151 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Im­portant Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit.
1st row: K5. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 6 sts. P1. K5.
2nd row: K6. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 5 sts. K5.
Repeat these 2 rows once.
5th row: (1st. buttonhole). K5. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 6 sts. P1. K2. Wl.fwd. K2tog. K1.
6th row: As 2nd row.
Repeat 1st. and 2nd rows 5 times. (10 yrs.—5 times) (12 yrs.—6 times).
Repeat 5th and 6th rows for 2nd buttonhole.
Next row: Cast off 5 sts. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 6 sts. P1. K5.
Next row: K5. Leave these 5 sts. on safety pin to be knitted later for front border. K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row. 121 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—131 sts.) (12 yrs.—141 sts.).
Change to No. 8 needles. Join (A) wool. Do not break (B) wool, but carry the colours evenly up side of work, from one stripe to next.
Working in stripes of 6 rows with (A) then 2 rows with (B), alternately, for remainder of cardigan, continue even in Stocking st. until work from cast-on edge measures 9 ins. (10 yrs.—9½ ins.) (12 yrs.—10 ins.) or desired length, ending with knit row.
Next row: P24. (10 yrs.—P26) (12 yrs.—P29). Cast off 11 sts. (all sizes) for one underarm. P51. (10 yrs.—P57) (12 yrs.—P61). Cast off 11 sts. (all sizes) for other underarm. Purl to end of row. Working on last 24 sts. (10 yrs.—26 sts.) (12 yrs.—29 sts.), proceed:—

RIGHT FRONT: Continue in stripe pattern, dec. 1. st. at armhole edge every row to 20 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—21 sts.) (12 yrs.—23 sts.).
Work 2 rows even, (10 yrs.—1 row) (12 yrs.—2 rows) thus ending at front edge.
Keeping armhole edge even, dec. 1. st. at neck edge on next and every following 4th row to 11 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—12 sts.) (12 yrs.—13 sts.).
Continue even until armhole from first shaping measures 6½ ins. (10 yrs.—7 ins.) (12 yrs.—7½ ins.) ending with purl row. Cast off.

BACK: With right side of work facing, join wool to next 51 sts. (10 yrs.—57 sts.) (12 yrs.—61 sts.) and continuing in stripe pat­tern, dec. 1. st. each end of needle every row to 43 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—47 sts.) (12 yrs.—49 sts.).
Continue even until armhole measures same as Right Front to shoulder, ending with purl row.

To shape shoulders: Cast off 11 sts. (10 yrs.—12 sts.) (12 yrs.—13 sts.) beginning next 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT: With right side of work facing, join wool to remaining 24 sts. (10 yrs.—26 sts.) (12 yrs.—29 sts.) and continue to correspond to Right Front, being careful to have all shapings for opposite side.

FRONT BORDER: Slip the 5 sts. left for border onto a No. 10 needle. With right side of work facing, join (B) wool.
Knit 12 rows. (10 yrs.—12 rows) (12 yrs.—14 rows).
Next row: (3rd buttonhole). K2. Wl.fwd. K2tog. K1.
Knit 15 rows. (10 yrs.—15 rows) (12 yrs.—17 rows). Working a buttonhole on next and every following 16th row. (10 yrs.—16th row) (12 yrs.—18th row), knit even in Garter st. until there are 7 buttonholes in all.
Knit even in Garter st. for length sufficient to go along the neck and other front edge. Cast off.

ARMBANDS: With (B) wool and No. 10 needles cast on 5 sts. (all sizes).
Knit even in Garter st. for length sufficient to go around armhole. Cast off. Make another armband to correspond.

TO MAKE UP: Press carefully. Sew shoulder seams. Sew the cast-off sts. of the front border to the 5 cast-off sts. at front edge of Right Front. Sew remainder of border in position. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes. Sew the cast-off and cast-on edges of each armband together. Place this seam to the centre of the 11 cast-off sts. at each underarm. Sew armbands in position around armholes.
