Girl's Bulky Pullover Pattern

MATERIALS:
Our Bulky was designed for use with Beehive Caressa and the original model, as illustrated, was knitted with this wool. So, for the same satisfactory results, be careful to use Caressa. You will need: 8 ozs. Main Colour (B) and 4 ozs. Contrasting Colour (A). (both sizes). Two No. 5 and two No. 1 Beehive Knitting Needles.

Tension: 3½ sts. and 5 rows = 1 inch with No. 1 needles.
The instructions are written for size 10 yrs. Any changes necessary for size 12 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

PATTERN FOR SHOULDER TRIM: 1st row: K2. *Keeping wool at back of work, slip next 2 sts. purlways. K2. Repeat from * to end of row.
2nd row: P2. *Keeping wool at front of work, slip next 2 sts. purlways. P2. Repeat from * to end of row.
3rd row: Knit.
4th row: Purl across row.
5th row: Knit.
6th row: Purl across row. These 6 rows complete one pattern.
This sweater is worked up the Front and down the Back without seams at shoulders.
Beginning at lower edge of Front, with (B) wool and No. 5 needles cast on 38 sts. (12 yrs.—42 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Im­portant Information" paragraph on patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit. Work 2½ ins. ribbing (K1. P1), (both sizes).
Change to No. 1 needles and proceed:—
1st row: Inc. 1. st. in 1st. st. Knit to last 2 sts. Inc. 1. st. in next st. K1.
2nd row: Purl across row. Repeat these 2 rows to 54 sts. on needle. (12 yrs.—62 sts.) ending with purl row.
Continue in Stocking st. inc. 1. st. each end of needle on next and every following row to 118 sts. on needle. (12 yrs.—126 sts.) ending with purl row. Join (A) wool.
With (A), knit 2 rows inc. 1. st. each end of needle on each row. Break (A).
With (B), continue in Stocking st. casting on 2 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows. 126 sts. on needle. (12 yrs.—134 sts.).
Work 4 rows even in Stocking st. Break (B).
Join (A) and work 1 complete Pattern for Shoulder Trim as given at beginning of this instruction. Break (A).
Join (B) and work 1st. to 4th rows inclusive of pattern.
5th row: K54. (12 yrs.—K58). Cast off 18 sts. for neck, (both sizes). Knit to end of row.
6th row: Working on last 54 sts. (12 yrs.—58 sts.), purl across row. Break (B).
Join (A) and work 1 complete pattern. Break (A).
Join (B) and work 1st. and 2nd rows of pattern. Break (B).
With wrong side of work facing, join (B) at neck edge to other 54 sts. (12 yrs.—58 sts.) and purl across row. Break (B).
Join (A) and work 1 complete pattern. Break (A).
Join (B) and work 1st. and 2nd rows of pattern.
3rd row: K54. (12 yrs.—K58). Cast on 18 sts. for neck, (both sizes). Knit across sts. of other shoulder. 126 sts. on needle. (12 yrs.—134 sts.). The neck is now complete.
Work 4th, 5th and 6th pattern rows. Break (B).
Join (A) and work 1 complete pattern. Break (A).
Join (B) and work 1st. to 4th rows inclusive of pattern.
Continue in Stocking st. casting off 2 sts. beginning next 2 rows. Join (A).
With (A), knit 2 rows dec. 1. st. each end of needle on each row. Break (A). 118 sts. on needle. (12 yrs.—126 sts.). With (B), continue in Stocking st. dec. 1. st. each end of needle every row to 54 sts. on needle (12 yrs.—62 sts.) then every al­ternate row to 38 sts. on needle. (12 yrs.—42 sts.) ending with purl row.
Change to No. 5 needles and work 2½ ins. ribbing (K1. P1). Cast off loosely in ribbing.

COLLAR: With (A) wool and No. 1 needles cast on 12 sts. (both sizes).
Knit 5 rows Garter st. (plain knitting every row).
**6th row: K8. Turn.
7th row: Having wool at front of work, slip the 1st. st. off right hand needle onto left hand needle. Take the wool to back of work and slip the slipped st. back onto right hand needle. When turning, always slip the 1st. st. from right hand needle in this manner to prevent a hole. Knit to end of row. Knit 4 rows Garter st. (2 ridges).**
Work from ** to ** 13 times (12 yrs.—14 times) in all. Knit 1 more row across the entire 12 sts. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP: Press very lightly. Darn in ends. Sew side seams. Placing the cast-on and cast-off edges at centre front of neck, sew shorter edge of collar evenly around neck, being careful to stretch seam when sewing so that the head will pass through easily. Turn under a ½-inch hem at each cuff and sew in position.
