Girl's Zippered Cardigan Pattern

MATERIALS:
This cardigan was knitted with P & B Superior Double Knitting, Patonised and carefully tested for tension and size. In order to be sure of satisfactory results from your knitting, be careful to use only this wool. You will need: 10 ozs. (10 and 12 yrs.—12 ozs.). Two No. 10 and two No. 8 Queen Bee Knitting Needles. One 12-inch "Zipper" Fastener.

Tension: 5 sts. = 1 inch and 15 rows = 2 ins. with No. 8 needles.

The instructions are written for size 8 yrs. Any changes necessary for sizes 10 and 12 yrs. are written in brackets thus:—( ).

TO "CROSS KNITWAYS": Having wool at back of work, insert point of right hand needle from right to left through the back of 2nd st. on left hand needle. Knit this st. but do not slip off needle. Knit 1st. st. on left hand needle in usual manner. Slip both sts. off needle together. The working of 2 sts. in this manner will be termed "Cross Knitways" throughout.

TO "CROSS PURLWAYS": Having wool at front of work, insert point of right hand needle from right to left through the front of 2nd st. on left hand needle. Purl this st. but do not slip off needle. Purl 1st. st. on left hand needle in usual manner. Slip both sts. off needle together. The working of 2 sts. in this manner will be termed "Cross Purlways" throughout.

BACK: With No. 10 needles cast on 65 sts. (10 yrs—71 sts.) (12 yrs.—77 sts.).
Before proceeding with these instructions, please read the "Important Information" paragraph on the patternbook page, regarding size of the garment you wish to knit.
1st row: K2 *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows of ribbing for 2½ ins. (10 yrs.—2¾ ins.) (12 yrs.—3 ins.) ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 8 needles and continue even in Stocking st. until work from beginning measures 9½ ins. (10 yrs.—10 ins.) (12 yrs.—10½ ins.) or desired length, ending with purl row.

To shape armholes: Cast off 4 sts. (10 yrs.—4 sts.) (12 yrs.—5 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then dec. 1. st. each end of needle on next and every following alternate row to 49 sts. on needle. (10 yrs—51 sts.) (12 yrs—53 sts.).
Continue even until armhole from first shaping measures 5½ ins. (10 yrs.—6 ins.) (12 yrs.—6½ ins.) ending with purl row.

To shape shoulders: Cast off 7 sts. (10 yrs.—7 sts.) (12 yrs.—8 sts.) beginning next 2 rows, then 8 sts. (all sizes) beginning follow­ing 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT: Note: There is no neck shaping in the front of this cardigan. With No. 10 needles cast on 35 sts. (10 yrs.—37 sts.) (12 yrs—39 sts.).
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. P1. K2.
2nd row: K3. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows for same number of rows as ribbed on Back, ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 8 needles and proceed:—
1st row: K13. (10 yrs.— K15) (12 yrs.— K17). *P1. Cross knitways. P1. K4. Repeat from * once. P1. Cross knitways. P1. K2.
2nd row: K3. *Cross purlways. K1. P4. K1. Repeat from * once. Cross purlways. K1. Purl to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows until work is same length as Back to armhole ending with 2nd row.

To shape armhole: Keeping continuity of pattern, at armhole edge cast off 4 sts. (10 yrs.—5 sts.) (12 yrs.—6 sts.) once, then dec. 1. st. every alternate row to 25 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—25 sts.) (12 yrs.—26 sts.).
Continue even in pattern until armhole measures same as Back to shoulder.

To shape shoulder: Keeping continuity of pattern, at armhole edge cast off 8 sts. (10 yrs.—8 sts.) (12 yrs.—9 sts.) once, then 9 sts. (all sizes) on following alternate row.
On remaining 8 sts. and keeping 2 sts. each end of needle in Garter st. work 1¾ ins. (10 and 12 yrs.—2 ins.) even in pattern. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT: With No. 10 needles cast on 35 sts. (10 yrs—37 sts.) (12 yrs—39 sts.).
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: *K1. P1. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. K3. Repeat these 2 rows for same number of rows as ribbed on Back, ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 8 needles and proceed:—
1st row: K2. *P1. Cross knitways. P1. K4. Repeat from * once. P1. Cross knitways. P1. Knit to end of row.
2nd row: P13. (10 yrs.—P15) (12 yrs.—P17). *K1. Cross purl­ways. K1. P4. Repeat from * once. Cross purlways. K3.

Continue in this pattern to correspond to Left Front, being careful to have all shapings for opposite side.

SLEEVES: With No. 10 needles cast on 35 sts. (10 yrs.—37 sts.) (12 yrs.—39 sts.).
Work the same number of rows in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back, ending with 2nd row.
Change to No. 8 needles and continue in Stocking st. inc. 1. st. each end of needle on 9th and every following 8th row to 51 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—55 sts.) (12 yrs.—59 sts.).
Continue even in Stocking st. until sleeve from beginning mea­sures 14 ins. (10 yrs.—15 ins.) (12 yrs.—16 ins.) or desired length, ending with purl row.

To shape cap: *Cast off 2 sts. beginning next 2 rows, then 1. st. beginning following 2 rows.* Repeat from * to * to 15 sts. on needle. (10 yrs.—19 sts.) (12 yrs.—17 sts.). Cast off remaining sts.

TO MAKE UP: Press pieces carefully. Sew all seams. Sew the cast-off edges of the borders together and sew the band thus formed across back of neck. Sew in sleeves. Sew ''Zipper" fastener in position.
