Parka for Girl or Boy
SIZES: 4 (6-8)
Instructions are for Size 4. Changes for Sizes 6 and 8 are in parentheses.
MATERIALS: SPINNERIN Moth-Proofed WHIRL-KNIT 3 (3-4) 2-oz. Skeins Color A (body)
4 (5-5) 2-oz. Skeins Color B (hood and sleeves)
1 Pr each of Knitting Needles Nos. 6 and 10
1 Zipper for Neck Opening approximately 5 ins
1 Zipper for Hood approximately 12 ins
GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 in; 11 rows = 2 ins
Important: Accurate gauge is absolutely essential.
PATTERN: Sleeves and Hood: Ribbing of K2, P2.
Body: On an even number of sts.
Row 1 (right side) : K1, P1 across.
Starting with a purl row, work 5 rows in stockinette st.
Repeat these 6 rows for pattern.
BACK: With No. 10 needles and Color A, cast on 48 (54-60) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1 in (hem). Start pattern and work even until 10½ (11-12) ins from start or 1 in longer than required length to armhole. Shape Armhole: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of every other row 13 (15-16) times. Bind off remaining 18 (20-24) sts for back of neck.
FRONT: Work same as for back until 10 (10½-11 ½) ins from start. Neck Opening: Divide work in half. Working on one side only and keeping 3 sts at front edge in Garter St, work to armhole. Shape armhole same as for back. At Same Time when there are 12 (13-14) sts on needle Shape Neck: At beg of neck edge, bind off 4 (5-7) sts once, 2 sts once, then dec 1 st every other row twice. Work other side to correspond.
SLEEVE: With Color B and No. 6 needles, cast on 22 (22-24) sts and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 (2½-2½) ins. Change to No. 10 needles and ribbing of K2, P2. Keeping to rib pattern, inc 1 st each end of every in 6 (8-9) times (34 (38-42) sts). Work even until 10½ (12-13) ins from start or required length to underarm. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of every 3 rows 9 (10-12) times. Bind off remaining 12 (14-14) sts.
PARKA HOOD: With Color B and No. 10 needles, cast on 68 (72-72) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2, inc 1 st each end of every 4 rows 7 (8-8) times (82 (88-88) sts). When work measures 5 (6-6) ins from start, divide work in half and work on one side only. Keeping outside edge even, dec 1 st at inside edge every other row 7 (8-8) times. At Same Time, when piece measures 7 (7½-8) ins, dec 1 st at outside edge every other row 4 times. Bind off remaining 30 (32-32) sts. Work other side to correspond.
DRAWSTRING: Make a chain to measure 36 ins. Slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in each following chain to end. Fasten off.
ASSEMBLING AND FINISHING: Sew armhole edges of sleeve to armhole edge of body, then seam sleeves and underarms. Hem bottom edge. Sew cast-on edge of hood to neck edge, allowing hood to overlap neck edge ½ in. Stitch along hood edge on right side then along neck edge to form casing for drawstring. Sew zipper in place at front neck opening. Sew zipper in place on hood. Draw cord through casing at neck.
