Size 40
Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 13 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
10 buttons.
Measurements: Length from top of shoulder—23½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—18 inches.
Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 104 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches, increasing 12 sts on the last row at equal distances apart (116 sts). Hereafter, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 13½ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 86 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 10 sts at beginning of each row until 26 sts remain.
Pocket Lining and Flap. It is wise to have these pieces made, ready to be worked into the Front. To make lining, cast on 27 sts and work in stockinette st for 4". Transfer sts to stitch holder. For flap, cast on 3 sts. 1st row: Inc. in 1st 2 sts, k 1. 2nd row: Inc. in 1st st, k 2, inc. in next st, k 1. 3rd row: K 1, (inc. in next st, k 2) twice. 4th row: K 1, inc. in next st, k 4, inc. in next st, k 2. 5th row: K 1, inc. in next st, k 3, 0, k 2 tog. (buttonhole), k 1, inc. in next st, k 2. 6th row: K 1, inc. in next st, p across to within last 3 sts, then inc. in next st, k 2. 7th row: K 1, inc. in next st, k to within last 3 sts, then inc. in next st, k 2. Repeat the last 2 rows 2 more times, and 6th row once. 13th row: K across. 14th row: K 2, p across, ending with k 2. Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times. Transfer sts onto stitch holder.
Left Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 60 sts and work as for Back for 4 inches, making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge after the 1st inch and every 2 inches thereafter. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 2 sts; then, on next row, cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off.) On last row, increase 6 sts at equal distances apart (66 sts). Hereafter, work in stockinette st for 4 inches, keeping the 10 sts at front edge in ribbing, and making a buttonhole as before every 2 inches. Next row: (K 1, p 1) 5 times, p 19, bind off 27 sts as if to k; then, k 1, p 8, k 1. Following row: Work in pattern across to within sts bound off; then, place the pocket sts behind the flap sts, having the wrong side of flap against the right side of pocket, and k across working together 1 st from each stitch holder until all sts are worked off (thus joining flap to pocket), k across remaining sts. Hereafter work straight until piece measures 13½ inches, continuing with buttonholes until 8 buttonholes in all are made, but—when piece measures 13½ inches—shape armhole as follows: Starting at arm- hole edge, bind off 6 sts, then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 51 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 18 sts (thus starting neck shaping). Then, dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 3 times. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 10 sts every other row 3 times.
Right Front. Work exactly as for Left Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at armhole edge, cast on 30 sts and work in stockinette st casting on 2 sts at end of each row until there are 98 sts on needle. Then, dec. 1 st at both ends of the 11th row and every 8th row thereafter until 64 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 15" along underarm seam. On next row, with right side of work toward you, k 4, * k 2 tog., k 3. Repeat from * across (52 sts). Hereafter, work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 6 inches. Bind off.
Collar. Starting at neck edge, cast on 129 sts. 1st row: K 1, inc. in next st, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across to within last 3 sts, then inc. in next st, k 2. 2nd row: K 1, p 2, * k 1, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 1, k 1. 3rd row: K 1, inc. in next st, * k 1, p 1. Repeat from * to within last 3 sts, then inc. in next st, k 2. 4th row: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. Repeat these last 4 rows until there are 157 sts on needle. Bind off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar to neck edge. Sew pocket linings in place. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
