Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 15 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
A 22-inch slide fastener.
Measurements: Length from top of shoulder—23½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—18½ inches.
Gauge: 11 sts make 2 inches; 7 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles, cast on 106 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st, (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 14½ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then, dec. 1 at end of each row until 78 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 9 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each row until 30 sts remain. Bind off.
Lining for Pocket and Flap: It is wise to have these made, ready to be worked into the Front. For lining of pocket, with No. 5 needles, cast on 23 sts and work in stockinette st for 4 inches, ending with a p row. Then slip sts on a stitch holder. For flap, with No. 5 needles, cast on 3 sts. 1st row: Inc. in each of 1st 2 sts, k 1. 2nd Row: Inc. in 1st st, k 2, inc. in next st, k 1. 3rd Row: K 1, (inc. in next st, k 2) twice. 4th Row: K 1, inc. in next st, k 4, inc. in next st, k 2. 5th Row: K 1, inc. in next st, k 6, inc. in next st, k 2. 6th Row: K 1, inc. in next st, p to within last 3 sts, inc. in next st, k 2. 7th Row: K 1, inc. in next st, k to within last 3 sts, inc. in next st, k 2. Repeat 6th and 7th rows until there are 23 sts on needle. Work stockinette st straight for 4 rows. Slip sts onto a stitch holder.
Left Front. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles cast on 54 sts, and work in ribbing for 4 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st, keeping the 2 sts at front edge in garter st until piece measures 8 inches, ending with a k row. Next Row: K 2, p 21, bind off 23 sts (for pocket), p across the remaining sts. Transfer the stitches of pocket and flap onto separate spare needles. Following Row: K across to within sts bound off, then, place the pocket sts behind the flap sts with the wrong side of flap against the right side of pocket and k across these sts, knitting tog. 1 st from each needle until all sts are worked off. K across remaining sts. Work straight in stockinette st keeping the 2 sts at front edge in k sts, until piece measures 14½ inches.
To Shape Armhole: Starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts, then dec. 1 st at same edge every other row 9 times. Work straight until piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, starting at front edge, bind off 12 sts (thus starting neck shaping). Then dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times. Work straight until piece measures 9 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping.
To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 8 sts every other row 3 times.
Right Front. Work exactly as for Left Front reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles, cast on 44 sts and work in ribbing for 4 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 74 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 18½ inches. Then to shape top of sleeve, dec. 1 st at beginning of each row until 22 sts remain. Bind off.
Collar. Starting at neck edge, with No. 4 needles cast on 109 sts and work in ribbing, increasing 1 st at end of each row until there are 133 sts on needle. Bind off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew pocket linings in place. Sew collar to neck edge. Sew slide fastener to both sides of Front.
