Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 9 (5¼ mm. size).
Measurements: Length from top of shoulder—22 inches.
Gauge: 4 sts make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.
Front. Starting at bottom, with No. 6 needles cast on 66 sts and work in ribbing k 1, p 1, for 3½ inches, increasing 8 sts in the last row, at equal distances apart (74 sts). Change to No. 9 needles and work as follows: 1st row: K across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: K 2, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * across. 4th row: * p 6, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2. 5th row: K across. 6th row: P across. 7th row: * K 6, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 2. 8th row: P 2, * k 2, p 6. Repeat from * across. Repeat these 8 rows 6 more times. Then work 4 more rows. Hereafter work as follows: 1st row: K across. 2nd row: K 7, p to within last 7 sts, k 7. 3rd row: K 8, * k 6, p 2. Repeat from * to within last 10 sts, then k 10. 4th row: K 8, p 2, * k 2, p 6. Repeat from * to within last 8 sts, then k 8. 5th row: K across. 6th row: K 9, p to within last 9 sts, then k 9. Piece should measure 14 inches.
To Shape Armholes: 1st row: Bind off 4 sts, k 5, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * to within last 14 sts, k 14. 2nd row: Bind off 4 sts, k 4, p 5, (k 2, p 6) twice. Then p 4, k 12, p 4, (k 2, p 6) twice, k 2, p 1, k 5. 3rd row: K 5, k 2 tog., k across, ending row with k 2 tog., k 5. 4th row: K 5, p 22, k 10, p 22, k 5. 5th row: K 5, k 2 tog., k 2, (p 2, k 6) twice, p 2, k 14, (p 2, k 6) twice. Then k 2, k 2 tog., k 5. 6th row: K 5, p 7, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 4, k 12, (p 6, k 2) twice. Then p 3, k 5. 7th row: K 5, k 2 tog., k to within last 7 sts, then k 2 tog., k 5. 8th row: K 5, p 20, k 10, p 20, k 5. Next row: K 5, k 2 tog., * k 4, p 2, k 2. Repeat from * once, k 7, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Hereafter work in pattern, keeping the 5 sts at both edges in garter st and dec. 1 st. at neck edge (inside border) every 5th row until 22 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row twice and 5 sts once. Work over remaining 5 sts in garter st for 2½ inches. Bind off. Attach yarn at center front and work other side to correspond.
Back. Work exactly as for Front to shoulder shaping, omitting neck opening. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows, and 5 sts at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Bind off. Break off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew strips across neck edge of Back.
