To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 100 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 10 sts at beginning of each row until 40 sts remain. Bind off.
Lining for Pocket: It is wise to have this made, ready to be worked into the Front. With No. 4 needles cast on 24 sts and work in pattern for 9 inches. Then slip sts onto a stitch holder.
Left Front. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles, cast on 66 sts and work as for Back for 7 inches. On next row work in pattern across 1st 24 sts, then (k 1, p 1) 12 times, turn. Next row: Starting at front edge, work in pattern across to top of pocket, then, across the 24 sts of pocket lining and across the remaining sts (66 sts). Work straight until piece measures 15½ inches.
To Shape Armhole: Starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts once, then dec. 1 st at same edge every other row 5 times, at the same time dec. 1st at neck edge every other row until 30 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, starting at armhole edge, bind off 10 sts every other row 3 times.
Right Front. Work exactly as for Left Front reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at armhole edge, with No. 4 needles, cast on 42 sts and work in pattern, casting on 2 sts at end of each row until there are 84 sts on needle. Work straight for 3 inches. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 10th row thereafter until 78 sts remain. Now dec. 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until 66 sts remain. Work 3 inches straight. Next row: K 5, * k 2 tog., k 4. Repeat from * across to within last 7 sts, then, k 2 tog., k 5. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Bind off.
Band: Starting at lower edge of Left Front, with No. 3 needles, cast on 12 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, making a buttonhole after the first 1½ inches and every 3½ inches thereafter until 5 buttonholes in all are made (to make a buttonhole, on one row, bind off the center 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off). After the 5th buttonhole is made, continue in ribbing until piece is long enough to go around Left Front, neck edge and along Right Front. Bind off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew band around edges of both Fronts and neck edge. Fold pocket lining in half and sew together on wrong side. Sew buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
