MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 3 balls (1 oz. balls) for size 1; 4 balls for sizes 2 and 3.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
5 bone double-pointed needles No. 5.
Buttons.

GAUGE: 1 pattern (9 sts) makes 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

PATTERN STITCH … (A multiple of 9 sts, plus 8, with an additional 5 sts in garter stitch for each front band.) Back and both Fronts are worked in one piece up to the armholes. 1st row: K 5, * p 2, k 4, p 2, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2, k 4, p 2, k 5. 2nd row: K 7, * p 4, k 2, p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending with p 4, k 7. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: K 5, * p 2, slip next 2 sts onto a double-pointed needle and hold in back of work, k next 2 sts; then k the 2 sts from double-pointed needle (a cable made). P 2, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2, a cable, p 2, k 5. Repeat the 2nd to 5th rows incl. for pattern.
