MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 2 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 11 rows make 1 inch.

PARKA

Starting at front edge, cast on 87 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: Right side (K 1, p 1) 14 times. The next 7 sts are first cable panel—p 1, k 5, p 1. (K 1, p 1) 8 times, k 1. The next 7 sts are second cable panel—p 1, k 5, p 1. (P 1, k 1) 14 times. 2nd row: (K 1, p 1) 14 times, k 1, p 5, k 2; (p 1, k 1) 8 times, k 1, p 5, k 1; (p 1, k 1) 14 times. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: (K 1, p 1) 14 times, p 1, make a cable—to make a cable, slip next 3 sts onto a double-pointed needle and hold in back of work, k 2, k sts from double-pointed needle, p 1; (k 1, p 1) 8 times, k 1, p 1, make a cable over next 5 sts, p 1; (p 1, k 1) 14 times. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 2nd, 1st and 2nd rows. Repeat these 8 rows until piece measures 4 inches in all. With right side facing, (k 1, p 1) 15 times, k 2 tog., (p 1, k 1) 11 times, p 1, k 2 tog., (p 1, k 1) 15 times—85 sts on needle. Next row: K 1, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last row until piece measures 6½ inches in all. Bind off. Fold in half and sew up back.

BAND … Cast on 9 sts. 1st row: K 1, (p 1, k 1) 4 times. Repeat this row for 20 inches. Bind off. Block band to measure 25 inches. Pin center of band to back seam of parka; ease lower edge of parka on each side into 4 inches of band on both sides of pin. Sew band in place. Remainder of band (8½ inches on both sides) to be used for ties.

MITTENS

Cast on 35 sts. Work cuff in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ inches. Next row: P 1, * k 1, p 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last row until piece measures 4 inches in all. Following row: Work across 17 sts, k 2 tog., work across remaining sts. Turn and work in pattern over the first 17 sts only, decreasing 1 st at end of each row until 7 sts remain. Bind off. Attach yarn where work was divided and work over next 17 sts to correspond. Fold in half and sew a neat seam along side and top edges of mitten.
