Block Pattern Cardigan Pattern

Size: 2 yr.

REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 10-ounces of Sport Yarn
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #1 single pointed, 1-pr. #3 single pointed.

GAUGE: 7 sts to an inch.

SLIP OVER BACK: With the #1 needles cast on 82 sts. Work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for 2-inches. Now change to the #3 needles and work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7½-inches in all. UNDERARM: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 3 times. Work even until the armhole measures 4½ inches above the first bind off. SHOULDERS: Bind off 8 sts at the be­ginning of the next 6 rows, (3 times at each side). Bind off the remaining sts loosely for the back of neck.

FRONT: With the #1 needles cast on 82 sts and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2 for 2-inches. Now change to the #3 needles and work as follows: ROW 1: K 19 sts; p 4, k 4, on the next 44 sts; k 19 sts. ROW 2: P 19 sts; k 4, p 4, over the next 44 sts; p 19 sts. ROW 3: Repeat row 1. ROW 4: Repeat row 2. ROW 5: K 19 sts; k 4, p 4, over the next 44 sts; k 19 sts. ROW 6: P 19 sts; p 4, k 4, over the next 44 sts; p 19 sts. ROW 7: repeat row 5. ROW 8: Repeat row 6. Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern. Work until the piece measures the same as the back up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 3 times. KEEPING the BLOCK PATTERN through the center, work until the arm- hole measures 3½ inches above the first underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: Work over 30 sts; bind off the next 12 sts very loosely; place these 30 sts onto a st holder; working on the last 30 sts; at the neck edge bind off 6 sts once. Work until the armhole measures the same as the back. From the armhole edge bind off 8 sts 3 times. Place the sts off st holder, back onto the needle and work to correspond to the first shoulder.

SHORT SLEEVES: Using the #1 needles cast on 60 sts and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for an inch. Change to the #3 needles and work in stockinette stitch increasing 1 stitch at each side of the work every 4th row, 5 times. (70 sts). Work 4 rows even. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 8 times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 12 times. Bind off. FINISHING: Sew shoulders seams, just one half, rest is for neck opening. Sew underarm seams and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armhole. NECK BANDS: With the #1 needles pick up and knit all sts around front of neck and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for ¾-inches. Bind off loosely. On the back, pick up the sts on neck and work for the same amount of rows as on the front neck band. At each side make 2 handmade buttonhole loops for buttons.

CARDIGAN: Back: Using the #1 needles cast on 82 sts and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2 for 2-inches. Change to the #3 needles and work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7½ inches in all. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, once at each side. Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every knit row 3 times. Work even until the armhole measures 4¾-inches above the underarm. SHOULDERS: Bind off 8 sts at the begin­ning of the next 6 rows, (24 sts for each shoulder). Bind off the remaining sts for the back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Using the #1 needles cast on 48 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 inches. Now change to the #3 needles and work as follows: 1st row: K 36 sts, p 4, k 4, p 4. 2nd row: K 4, p 4, k 4, purl to end of row. 3rd row: Repeat row 1. 4th row: Repeat row 2. 5th row: K 40 sts, p 4, k 4. 6th row: P 4, k 4, purl to end of row. 7th row: Repeat row 5. 8th row: Repeat row 6. (Note: These 12 sts are worked in the box border all the way up to the neck and the remainder in stockinette stitch). Work until the piece measures the same as the back up to the underarm, ending with a purl row. UNDERARM SHAPING: From the underarm edge bind off 2 sts once; decrease 1 st at the underarm edge every other row 3 times. Now work until the armhole measures 3½ inches from the first underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 11 sts once; 4 sts twice. Work until the armhole measures the same as the back up to the shoulder. From the armhole edge bind off 8 sts 3 times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to the left front doing the first buttonhole ¾-inches from beginning and thereafter every 2-inches apart. BUTTONHOLES: Bind off 4 center sts of the 12 block border. On row back, cast on 4 above those bound off. SLEEVES: Using the #1 needles cast on 48 sts and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for 2 inches. Change to the #3 needles and knit across row, increasing to 62 sts. Do entire sleeve in blocks of p 4, k 4, as on front border; changing pattern every 4th row. Work until the sleeve measures 8½-inches in all. UNDERA­RM: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of work every other row until 36 sts remain on the needle. Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every row until 24 sts remain. Bind off. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way. COLLAR: Using the #3 needles, cast on 76 sts. Work 20 rows in the block pattern. Bind off 12 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows. Bind off the remaining sts. FINISHING: Sew shoulders, side seams, sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armhole. Sew collar into place.

HAT: Using the #3 needles, cast on 44 sts. Work the block pattern as on the sleeves of sweater until the piece measures 3 inches in all. Cast on 20 sts at each end of work, (88 sts). Change to the #1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for an inch. Change to the #3 needles and knit across next row, increasing to 94 sts. Purl across next row. Work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 4½-inches from ribbing; decreasing 4 sts on last purl row. 1st dec. row: * slip 1, k 2 tog, psso, k 15, repeat from * across row. Purl back. 2nd dec. row: * slip 1, k 2 tog, psso k 13, repeat from * across row. Purl back. Continue to de­crease as above, (having 2 sts less between each decrease), until 10 sts are left. Pull yarn through all sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side. Sew seam. Press back flap at front.
