BACK—Cast on 132 sts.
Row 1—K. 41 sts., P. 2 sts., K. 2 sts., (ribbing) for 50 sts., K. 41 sts.
Row 2—P. 41 sts., K. 2 sts., P. 2 sts., for 50 sts., P. 41 sts.
Repeat these 2 rows for 3 inches, then work all sts. in Stockinette st. until back measures 9 inches from start. Bind off 8 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows, then bind off 3 sts. at the beginning of the next 6 rows, then decrease 1 st. each side every other row 7 times, then every 4th row 6 times (72 sts. remaining).
Work even for 21 rows, then increase 1 st. each side every 6th row 5 times (82 sts. on needle).
Work 8 rows even, then on next row bind off 7, K. next 27, bind off 12 sts. for back of neck.
On remaining sts. work left shoulder, bind off 7 sts. at beginning of every row 5 times. Work right Shoulder to correspond.
Work backs for 2 pockets as follows: Upper pocket, cast on 30 sts., work in Stockinette st. for 3 inches, ending with P. row, slip sts. on stitch holder. Lower pocket, cast on 34 sts., work in Stockinette st. for 3½ inches, ending with P. row, slip sts. on stitch holder.
LEFT FRONT—Cast on 4 sts., work in Stockinette st., cast on 3 sts. at end of every P. row and 1 st. at end of every K. row until there are 61 sts. on needle, then increase 1 st. at end of K. row and cast on 13 sts. at end of P. row (74 sts. on needle).
On next P. row work buttonhole as follows: P. 3, bind off 4, P. to end of row.
On next row cast on 4 sts. over those bound off.
Now work even at each side, working another buttonhole in same manner every 19th row 5 times more, working lower pocket on same row as 3rd buttonhole as follows: P. 3, bind off 4, P. 20, bind off 34, P. to end of row.
On next row K. first 12 sts. then K. 34 sts. of lower pocket from stitch holder over the 34 bound off sts. and cast on 4 sts. over those bound off for buttonhole.
On 9th row after 5th buttonhole work upper pocket as follows: P. 28 sts., bind off 30 sts., P. to end of row.
On next row, K. the 30 sts. of upper pocket over the 30 bound off sts. Work 5 rows even, then bind off 8 sts. for underarm, then 4 sts. at armhole side 2 times.
Now decrease 1 st. every 4th row at neck end 20 times, and at the same time decrease 1 st. every other row at armhole 8 times, then every 4th row 7 times.
Work even until armhole measures 11½ inches, bind off 7 sts. at beginning of next 2 K. rows, bind off remaining sts.
Work right front to correspond, omitting buttonholes.
POCKET BANDS—Pick up and K. the bound off sts., work Stockinette st. for 4 rows, K. 1 row on purled side for turn of hem, then work 4 rows more, bind off. Turn hem under and sew with back st., sew sides to vest, sew pockets to inside of vest, sew shoulder and underarm seams.
FACING—Left Front—Cast on 4 sts., work in Stockinette st., increase 1 st. at end of every P. row and 3 sts. at end of every K. row until there are 25 sts. on needle.
On next row K. 9, bind off 4 sts., K. 12, cast on 3 sts. Now working on last 15 sts., bind off 3 sts. at the beginning of every K. row and cast on 3 sts. at end of every K. row (always having 15 sts. on needle) until there are 14 increases from start of point, then cast on 13 sts. at end of K. row and continue to decrease 3 sts. at beginning of K. row until 16 sts. remain, bind off.
Now working on first 9 sts., decrease 1 st. at the beginning of every P. row and increase 1 st. at end of every P. row (always having 9 sts. on needle) until there are 15 increases from start of point. Now working even on 9 sts., work first buttonhole as follows: K. 3, bind off 4, K. 1. On next row cast on 4 sts. over those bound off.
Continue to work 5 more buttonholes in same manner to correspond with left front. Work even for 35 inches (from last buttonhole) or enough to fit around neck and right front, then work facing for point on right front, decrease 1 st. at beginning of every K. row and increase 1 st. at end of every K. row until there are 10 decreases, slip sts. on stitch holder.
Cast on 16 sts., cast on 3 sts. at end of next 3 P. rows, at beginning of next P. row bind off 13 sts. and cast on 3 sts. at end of same row, then bind off 3 sts. at beginning of every P. row and cast on 3 sts. at end of every P. row (15 sts. on needle), until there are 12 increases from start.
At end of next P. row cast on 4 sts. and work across sts. from stitch holder (24 sts. on needle). Continue to bind off 3 sts. at beginning of every P. row and 1 st. at beginning of every K. row until 4 sts. remain, bind off.
Sew facing to edge of vest, turn under and sew to inside, overcast buttonholes.
ARMHOLE FACING—Cast on 6 sts. Work in Stockinette st. for 24½ inches or long enough to fit around armhole.
Sew facing to edge of armhole, turn under arid sew to inside.
