P. 1 row. Now start increases for shoulders as follows:
Row 1—K. 1 st., K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts. (seam sts.), K. 20 sts. (back), K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts. (seam sts.), K. 1 st., (30 sts.).
Row 2—Purl all even numbered rows.
Row 3—K. 2 sts. (sleeve), K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 22 sts. (back), K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 2 sts. (sleeve), (34 sts.).
Row 5—K. 2 sts. in first st., K. 2, K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 24, K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 2, K. 2 sts. in last st., (40 sts.).

Row 15—K. 2 sts., K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 10, K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 34, K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 10, K. 2 sts. in each of the next 2 sts., K. 2, (74 sts.).
Continue to increase on seam sts. (8 sts. every K. row), having 2 more sts. on back, 2 more on each sleeve and 1 more on each front, until there are 11 sts. on each front.
On next K. row start V neck, increase 1 st. each end every 6th row 9 times, then every 4th row 5 times. When there are 63 sts. in each front, with straight needles P. 63 sts. for right front. (Leaving remaining sts. on circular needle as a stitch holder). Work even at underarm, increase 1 st. at neck end every other row 5 times, (68 sts.).
At end of next K. row cast on 10 sts. (for facing).
Work even until work measures 4½ inches from underarm.
Now start pocket opening—P. 36 sts., bind off 1 st., P. remaining 41 sts., K. 41 sts., slip next 36 sts. on stitch holder to be worked later, turn, P. 2 sts. together, P. to end of row.
Continue to P. 2 sts. together at the beginning of every P. row until 22 sts. remain. K. 1 row, break yarn, pick up the 36 sts. from stitch holder and K. 1 row, P. 1 row, turn, work 2 sts. in first st. of every K. row until there are 55 sts. on needle, P. 55 sts., cast on 1 st., put all 78 sts. on one needle, work even until front measures 13½ inches from underarm.
On next P. row, bind off 20 sts. at front edge, K. remaining 58 sts. (for turn of hem), K. 1 row, P. 1 row, for 1 inch, bind off.
LEFT FRONT—Work same as right front, after adding 10 sts. for facing work 4 rows even, then work first double buttonhole as follows: K. 3 sts., bind off 4 sts., K. 6 sts., bind off 4 sts., K. to end of row.
On next row cast on 4 sts. over those bound off. Work 20 rows even, then work pocket opening to correspond with right front, working a double buttonhole every 22nd row 4 more times.
Work 12 rows only between 5th and 6th buttonholes.
When front measures same as right front, bind off facing and turn hem in same manner.
SLEEVES—On 101 sts., work 1 inch even, then decrease 1 st. each side every inch 15 times.
When sleeve measures 16 inches or desired length, K. 1 st., P. 1 st., (ribbing) for 4½ inches, (working tightly or use No. 1 steel needles if desired).
BACK—On remaining 124 sts. work 7 inches even, then decrease 1 st. each side, every 2 inches, 3 times. When underarm measures 13½ inches, with right side of work toward you, P. 1 row for turn of hem. Work 1 inch even, bind off. Sew underarm seams, sew hem at bottom.
NECK FACING—Cast on 8 sts., work in Stockinette st. about 29 inches or enough to fit around neck. Sew to neck, join to front facings, sew to inside of sweater, over-cast double buttonholes together.
POCKET FACING—Cast on 8 sts., work in Stockinette st. for 5 inches, bind off. Work 3 more pieces the same, sew one piece to each side of pocket opening, fold and sew to inside of sweater.
POCKETS—Cast on 20 sts., K. 1 row, P. 1 row, increasing 1 st. at one side every other row until there are 40 sts. Work even for 4¾ inches, bind off. Work another piece to correspond, increasing at opposite side. Sew to inside of sweater with straight edge even with front facing and hem.
STRAPS—Cast on 9 sts., work even for 5 inches, attach buckle to center, fold in half and sew to back above hem, 2 inches from underarm seam. Make another strap the same for other side.
Cast on 18 sts., work even for 4 inches, now on first 9 sts. work point by K. 2 sts. together each side every row. Work second 9 sts. to point, fold and sew together. Make another strap the same. Sew to front of sweater, above hem, 3 inches from underarm seam.
