Black No. 617, 4 Balls
BACK—With Black cast on 130 sts., K. 1 st., P. 1 st., (ribbing) for 4 inches. Change to Beet Root and K. 1 row, P. 1 row, (Stockinette st.) increasing 1 st. each side every half inch 9 times (148 sts. on needle). Work even until back measures 14 inches from start.
Now start decreases for armholes, K. 2, slip 1, K. 1, pass slip st. over. Work to within last 4 sts., K. 2 together, K. 2.
Continue to decrease 1 st. each side in this manner every 4th row 21 times more (104 sts. on needle).
On next row start decreases for shoulders as follows: K. 2, slip 1, K. 2 together, pass slip st. over, K. to within last 5 sts., K. 3 together, K. 2.
Continue to decrease in this manner 2 sts. each side every other row until 40 sts. remain, bind off for back of neck.
FRONT—Cast on 130 sts., work same as back to underarm. Decrease for armholes in same manner 14 times (120 sts. on needle).
On next decrease row start neck opening. K. 2, slip 1, K. 1, pass slip st. over, K. 51, slip these sts. on a stitch holder, bind off 10, and on remaining 55 sts. work right side of front. Continue to decrease 1 st. every 8th row at armhole and work even at front edge, until 48 sts. remain. Now work even at armhole, bind off 5 sts. at neck end, then decrease 1 st. at neck end every other row 14 times, work even until armhole measures 10½ inches, bind off.
Work left side of front to correspond.
SLEEVES—With Black cast on 90 sts. K. 1 st., P. 1 st., (ribbing) for 1½ inches. Change to Beet Root and work in Stockinette st. increasing 1 st. each side every 8th row 4 times, then decrease 1 st. each side every other row in same manner as back until 20 sts. remain, bind off.
With Black and No. 2½ needles, pick up the 10 bound off sts. at center front and K. plain for 1¾ inches, then work buttonhole as follows: K. 3, bind off 4, K. last 2 sts.
On next row cast on 4 sts. over those bound off.
K. 1¾ inches, work another buttonhole as before. K. ½ inch, bind off.
Pick up 10 sts. for underlap at back of band at neck opening. K. 4 inches even, bind off. Sew underlap to right side of sweater, sew upper band to left side.
Sew shoulder seams, sew underarm seams for 14 inches from bottom, sew sleeves in place, sew sleeve seams.
COLLAR—With Black pick up 156 sts. around neck starling and ending at center of front bands. K. 1 st., P. 1 st., (ribbing) increasing 1 st. each end every 3rd row 18 times (192 sts. on needle), bind off.
