SOCKS—With No. 13 steel sock needles and Sandalwood cast on 76 sts., 25 sts. on each of 2 needles and 26 sts. on 3rd needle. K. 1 st., P. 1 st., for 3 rows, then follow chart for 41 rows for cuff (carrying yarn at back of work, being careful not to draw yarn taut), P. 1 row for turn of cuff, turn work inside out and work leg, K. 3, P. 1, for 9 inches.
On next row decrease 1 st. each side of center purled st. on first needle as follows: * K. 2 sts. together, K. 1, P. 1, K. 1, K. 2 sts. together, finish row, work 4 rows, repeat from * 4 times, 68 sts. remaining. Work 6 inches even, then start heel.
HEEL—Divide sts., putting 33 sts. on first needle (heel needle), 18 sts. on 2nd needle, and 17 sts. on 3rd needle. On heel K. 1 row, P. 1 row, for 26 rows, always slipping the first st.
To turn heel, with right side toward you, K. 19, K. 2 together, turn, slip 1, P. 5, P. 2 together, P. 1, turn, slip 1, K. 6, K. 2 together, K. 1, turn, slip 1, P. 7, P. 2 together, P. 1. Continue in this manner until 17 sts. remain.
Then pick up 13 sts. on side of heel (this is known as first needle).
Work ribbing across instep (2nd needle), and pick up 13 sts. on other side of heel and 8 sts. from heel needle (3rd needle).
* K. 1 row even, ending at center of heel. K. to within 3 sts. of end of 1st heel needle, K. 2 together, K. 1, work across instep, on last needle, K. 1, slip 1, K. 1, pass slip st. over K. st., K. to end of needle.
Repeat from * until there are 8 decreasing rounds (62 sts. remaining). Work even, continuing ribbing on instep for 5 inches, then K. 5 rows plain.
TOE—Counting from center of sole place 15 sts. on first needle, 32 on 2nd needle, and 15 on 3rd needle, K. to last 3 sts. of first needle, K. 2 together, K. 1. On 2nd needle, K. 1, slip 1, K. 1, pass slip st. over K. st., K. to last 3 sts., K. 2 together, K. 1. 3rd needle, K. 1, slip 1, K. 1, pass slip st. over, K. to end of row. K. 3 rows even, next row decrease, 2 rows even, next row decrease, 1 row even, then decrease every round until 18 sts. remain. Weave sole sts. to top sts.
