Infant Size 1 (Chest = 20 inches)
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 3 balls (¾ oz. balls). Clark's O.N.T. Plastic or Aluminum Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) ... 6 buttons.
GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Width around back and front at underarm (cardigan buttoned)—20 inches. Length from shoulder to lower edge—11 inches. Length of sleeve seam—7½ inches.
BACK … With No. 1 needles cast on 72 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: * K 2, O, k 2, pass the O over the last 2 k sts. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: * O, k 2, pass the O over the 2 k sts, k 2. Repeat from * across. 4th row: P across. The last 4 rows constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 7½ inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Then dec 1 st at both ends of every other row twice. Work without decreasing until piece measures 3½ inches from first row of armhole shaping. Bind off.
LEFT FRONT … With No. 1 needles, cast on 43 sts. 1st row: (K 1, p 1) 18 times; k 7 (this is front edge). 2nd row: K 8, (p 1, k 1) 17 times and p 1 (side edge). Repeat the last 2 rows for 1 inch. Change to No. 3 needles and, keeping the 7 sts at front edge in garter st (k each row), work the remaining 36 sts in pattern until piece measures 7½ inches in all, ending at side edge.
To Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next row. Then dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row twice. Work without decreasing until piece measures 2½ inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge.
To Shape Neck: Work across first 12 sts. Place these 12 sts on a stitch holder and finish row. Continuing in pattern, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 5 times in all (21 sts remain). If necessary, work without decreasing until piece measures 3½ inches from first row of armhole shaping. Bind off.
RIGHT FRONT … Work to correspond with Left Front, reversing shapings and making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge when piece measures ½ inch and every 2 inches thereafter until 5 buttonholes in all are made (always measure from the center of previous buttonhole)—to make a buttonhole, k 3, O, k 2 tog—the O is counted as a stitch on the next row. The 6th buttonhole is made on the neckband.
SLEEVES … With No. 1 needles, cast on 44 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 8th row 5 times in all (54 sts). Work without increasing until piece measures 7½ inches in all.
To Shape Top: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Then dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 24 sts remain. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining sts. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew in sleeves.
NECKBAND … With right side facing, k across sts of Right Front stitch holder, then pick up and k 51 sts around to next stitch holder, k across sts on second stitch holder (75 sts). Keeping the 7 sts at both ends in garter st, work the other 61 sts in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 inch, making the 6th buttonhole after the first ½ inch and in line with previous buttonholes. Bind off. Work a row of sc along both front edges, keeping work flat. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
