Infant's Legging Set Pattern

Materials for Set

13 ozs. CYNTHIA Germantown or 15 ozs. CYNTHIA Knitting Worsted Light Blue No. 333.
One pair bone needles No. 5 (3¾ MM).
One set double pointed needles No. 5 (3¾ MM).
One set double pointed steel needles No. 12 (2¼ MM).
Nine-inch zipper fastener.

Gauge: 11 sts = 2 inches

Sweater

Beginning at lower edge of back, cast on 64 sts and work ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 2 inches, then work stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) until back measures 19 inches from beginning. Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows; work even for 4 inches. Next row: K 16 sts and slip on st holder, bind off 20 sts and K remaining 16 sts. Work even on these 16 sts for 9 rows, then in­crease 1 st at neck edge every other row 5 times (21 sts). Cast on 10 sts at neck edge and work even until armhole measures same as on back. Cast on 6 sts on underarm edge (37 sts) and work even for 7 inches; break yarn at end of P row and leave sts on extra needle. Slip the 16 sts for other shoulder onto needle and work to correspond. When underarm edge measures 7 inches, K across sts on both fronts, K 1, P 1 for 2 inches and bind off.

Sleeves: Pick up 40 sts around armhole edge. Work even for 7 inches. Next K row: K 2 sts together, then K every 4th and 5th sts together across row, K last 2 sts together. K 1, P 1 for 1 inch and bind off.

Collar: Pick up 61 sts around neck edge. Work ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 2 inches and bind off. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew zipper fastener in front opening.

Leggings

Cast on 64 sts and work ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 3 rows. Next row: K 1, * yarn over, K 2 sts to­gether, repeat from * across row, ending P 1. Work ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 6 more rows. Work stockinette st until work measures 9 inches from beginning, then decrease 1 st both ends of every K row until 38 sts remain. Continue working on these 38 sts for 3½ inches. Next K row: K 1 st, * yarn over, K 2 sts together, repeat from * across row, ending K 1. Next row: Purl. Next row: K 32, turn, P 15 sts. Continue working on these 15 instep sts for 20 rows (3 inches), ending with a P row, then decrease 1 st at the beginning of the next 6 rows (9 sts remaining), break yarn.

Tie in yarn where turn was made and 17 sts remain on needle. With same needle, pick up 14 sts on side of instep, K across the 9 instep sts, pick up 14 sts on other side of instep, K the re­maining 6 sts (60 sts in all) and work sole as follows: K 7 rows garter st (K every row). 8th row: K 2 together, K 17, K 2 together, K 18, K 2 together, K 17, K 2 together (56 sts). 9th row: K even. 10th row: K 2 together, K 16, K 2 to­gether, K 16, K 2 together, K 16, K 2 together (52 sts). 11th row: K even. 12th row: K 2 together, K 15, K 2 together, K 14, K 2 together, K 15, K 2 together (48 sts). Bind off.

Work second leg to correspond until the K row following the openwork row at ankle, then work as follows: K 21, turn, P 15, turn. Continue working on these 15 sts for 20 rounds (3 inches), then decrease 1 st at the beginning of the next 6 rows (9 sts). Break yarn.

Tie in yarn where turn was made and 6 sts re­main, pick up 14 sts on side of instep, K across the 9 instep sts, pick up 14 sts on other side of instep and K remaining 17 sts. Work sole same as on first foot.

Gusset: Cast on 3 sts. Work stockinette st, in­creasing 1 st both ends of every K row until there are 19 sts, then decrease 1 st both ends of every K row until all sts are taken off. Sew gusset in place. Join back to front and sew up feet. Cro­chet cords to run through open-work at waist and ankles. Make 6 tassels and attach to ends of cords.

Cap

Cast on 74 sts on double pointed needles No. 5 and join. K 1, P 1 for 12 rows (1½ inches). Knit plain for 5½ inches. Next row: Purl. Next row: K 1 st, * P 2 together, K 2 together, re­peat from * around row, ending P 1. K 1, P 1 for 12 rows. Bind off tightly. With needle and piece of yarn, gather in top and fasten off.

Pompon: Cut cardboard circle 3 inches in diame­ter with hole in center. Wind yarn from out­side edge through hole in center until circle is covered. Cut yarn, leaving end long enough to fasten sts and attach to cap. Cut cardboard away. Tie yarn securely around sts. Trim ends and sew to top of cap.

Mitten

Right Mitten: Cast on 26 sts on steel double pointed needles (8 sts on 1st needle, 10 sts on 2nd needle, 8 sts on 3rd needle). K 1, P 1 for 2 in­ches. Next round: * Yarn over, K 2 together, repeat from * around row. K 4 rounds. Next round: Begin increases for thumb: increase 1 st in the 1st st, K 1 st, increase 1 st in the next st, complete round. K 1 round. Next round: In­crease 1 st in the 1st st, K 3 sts, increase 1 st in the next st, complete round. K 1 round. Next round: Increase 1 st in the 1st st, K 5 sts, increase 1 st in the next st, complete round. K 1 round. Next round: Increase 1 st in the 1st st, K 7, in­crease 1 st in the next st, complete round. Next round: Slip first 11 sts on pin, cast on 3 sts over the sts on pin at base of thumb, complete round. Knit even on these 26 sts for 7 rounds, then de­crease as follows: K 1, K 2 together, K 7, K 2 together, K 2, K 2 together, K 7, K 2 together, K 1 (22 sts). K 1 round. Next round: K 1, K 2 together, K 5, K 2 together, K 2, K 2 together, K 5, K 2 together, K 1 (18 sts). Knit 1 round. Continue to decrease in this manner every other round until 10 sts remain. Break yarn, draw through these 10 sts and fasten on wrong side.

Thumb: Slip the 11 sts from pin on 2 needles, pick up 3 sts at base of thumb. Knit 2 rounds, decreasing 1 st each round at base of thumb. Work on remaining 12 sts for 6 rounds. Next round: * K 2 sts together, repeat from * around row. Draw yarn through remaining 6 sts and fasten on wrong side.

Left Mitten: Work same as right mitten, making first increase for thumb in the 3rd st from the end of the 3rd needle and the second increase in the last st. Work other increases to correspond.
