These directions are for subteen size 8. Changes for subteen sizes 10, 12 and 14 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Cuddlespun (2 oz. skeins) — 4(5-5-6) Main Color (M C)
BERNAT Meadowspun (1 oz. pull skeins) — 1(2-2-2) Contrasting Color (C C)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 10½ OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE GAUGES GIVEN BELOW
1 aluminum crochet hook Size G
5 buttons

GAUGE: 5 sts = 2 inches; 8 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 2 sts.
Row 1: * K 1, y o, sl 1 st as to P, repeat from * across row.
Row 2 (right side): * K tog the slipped st and y o, y o, sl next st as to P, repeat from * across row.
Repeat Row 2 for pattern stitch.

STRIPING PATTERN: Work in pattern st as follows: * 2 rows M C, 2 rows C C, repeat from * for striping pattern.

NOTE 1: Entire garment is worked vertically and it is very important to obtain the ROW GAUGE as given above.
NOTE 2: When binding off, always K tog the slipped st and the y o.

BODY: Using M C and starting at cuff, cast on 28(28-32-32) sts. RIGHT SLEEVE: K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. Then work even in striping pattern until piece measures 14(14½-15-15½) inches, ending with 2 rows C C. SHAPE UNDERARM: On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every other row once more, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work 1 row even. Using M C, at the beg of each of the next 2 rows cast on 18(18-20-20) sts for underarm seams. RIGHT BACK AND FRONT: Work even in striping pattern on 68(68-76-76) sts until piece measures 5½(6-6-6½) inches above last group of cast on sts, ending with 2 rows C C. On next row starting at lower edge of back, work 34(34-38-38) sts and sl these sts onto a holder, bind off 4 sts (side neck edge), work to end of row. RIGHT FRONT: Con­tinue in striping pattern on 30(30-34-34) sts for 15(15-19-19) rows more, ending with 2 rows C C. Break off C C. RIGHT FRONT BAND: Using M C and starting at neck edge, P 1 row, inc at even intervals to 36(38-40-42) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 4(4-2-2) rows. BUTTONHOLES: K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 4(6-4-6) sts, y o, work 2 tog, * work in ribbing for 5(5-6-6) sts, y o, work 2 tog, repeat from * 3 times more, K 1, P 1. Work in ribbing for 3(3-2-2) rows more. Bind off. BACK: Sl 34(34-38-38) sts from holder onto needle, join M C at neck edge and continue in striping pattern for 33(33-41-41) rows more (back of neck), ending with 2 rows M C. Sl these 34(34-38-38) sts onto a holder. LEFT FRONT: Using M C, cast on 36(38-40-42) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 8(8-4-4) rows. K the next row, dec at even intervals to 30(30-34-34) sts. Join C C and starting with 2 rows C C, work even in striping pattern for 16(16-20-20) rows, ending with 2 rows M C. LEFT FRONT AND BACK: On next row work 30(30-34-34) sts, cast on 4 sts (side of neck), work the 34(34-38-38) sts of back onto same needle — 68(68-76-76) sts. Continue in strip­ing pattern until piece measures 5½(6-6-6½) inches above cast on sts for side of neck, ending with 2 rows M C. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 18(18-20-20) sts. SHAPE UNDERARM: Continue in striping pattern, dec 1 st each end of needle every other row twice. Put a marker in work. LEFT SLEEVE: Work even on 28(28-32-32) sts until piece measures 12(12½-13-13½) inches above marker in work. Using M G, K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. Bind off in ribbing.

COLLAR: Using M C, cast on 45(45-49-49) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 inches. Bind off in ribbing.

FINISHING: Sew underarm and sleeve seams. WAIST­BAND: Using M C, with right side facing you, pick up 80(84-86-90) sts on lower edge from center of left front band to center of right front band. Work even in stockinette st for 1½ inches. Bind off. Fold in half and hem, leaving openings for drawstring. DRAWSTRING: Using M C, make a ch 46 inches long and pull through hem. Finish buttonholes. Sew on collar. Steam lightly. Sew on buttons.
