MATERIALS
BERNAT Ski and Sports (2 oz. skeins) — 5(6-6-7) Main Color (M C); 1 Contrasting Color (C C)
1 each circular needles Nos. 5 and 10 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 set each d p needles Nos. 3 and 5
1 steel crochet hook No. 00
8 buttons
GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches; 6 rows = 1 inch on No. 10 needle; 11 sts = 2 inches; 7 rows = 1 inch on No. 5 needle
PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 7 sts plus 5.
Row 1: K 5, * P 2, K 5, repeat from * across row.
Row 2: P 5, * K 2, P 5, repeat from * across row.
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.
STRIPING PATTERN: Work in pattern st as follows: * 2 rows C C, 8 rows M C, repeat from * for striping pattern.
JACKET
NOTE: Body of jacket is worked vertically in one piece and it is very important to obtain the ROW GAUGE as given above.
BODY: Using No. 10 needle and M C, starting at left front, cast on 47 sts. Work back and forth in pattern st for 6(2-6-4) rows. Join C C and work in striping pattern until there are 4(5-5-5) C C stripes, ending with 6(4-2-6) rows M C. Put a marker in work to mark start of back. Continue in striping pattern until there are 10(10-10-11) C C stripes above marker for start of back, ending with 2(4-6-2) rows M C. Put another marker in work to mark end of back. Continue in striping pattern until there are 4(5-5-5) C C stripes above marker for end of back, ending with 6(2-6-4) rows M C. Bind off.
SLEEVES: Using No. 5 circular needle and M C, cast on 40 (40-46-46) sts. Work back and forth in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 2½ inches, inc 0(0-1-1) st at end of last row. Change to No. 10 needle and work in pattern st for 2(6-8-2) rows. Join C C and work in striping pattern, inc 1 st each end of needle every 2 inches 5(6-4-5) times, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work even on 50(52-55-57) sts until piece measures 15½(16-16½-17) inches, ending with 4 rows M C. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3 sts. Sl remaining 44(46-49-51) sts onto a holder.
YOKE: Using No. 10 needle and M C, with right side facing you and starting at right front edge, pick up and K 31(32-34-37) sts evenly spaced across upper edge to within 4 rows of first marker in work, work from holder, in pattern as established the 44(46-49-51) sts of one sleeve, skip 8 rows for underarm (4 rows each side of first marker), pick up and K 61(66-70-75) sts evenly spaced across upper edge to within 4 rows of second marker in work, work from holder in pattern as established the 44(46-49-51) sts of other sleeve, skip 8 rows for underarm, pick up and K 31(32-34-37) sts evenly spaced to left front edge — 211 (222-236-251) sts. Row 1 (wrong side): P 3(5-5-2), K 2, * P 5, K 2, repeat from * ending P 3(5-5-2). Row 2: K 3 (5-5-2), P 2, * K 5, P 2, repeat from *, ending K 3(5-5-2). Join C C and work 2 rows in striping pattern as established. Using M C, work 6 rows. FIRST DEC ROW: Using M C, dec 1 st at center of each K 5 rib — 29(32-34-35) sts decreased. Continuing in striping pattern, repeat dec every 10th row twice more, ending with 8 rows M C and dec 1 st each end of needle in last row FOR SIZE 8 ONLY — 122(126-134-146) sts. Using C C, K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 2 rows. Using M C, K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 2(4-6-8) rows. FOURTH DEC ROW: Using M C, K 2 tog, * P 2 tog, K 2 tog, repeat from * across row — 61(63-67-73) sts. NECKBAND: Change to No. 5 needles. Using M C, P 1, K 1 in ribbing for 7 rows. P the next row, dec at even intervals to 61(61-61-68) sts. HOOD: Change to No. 10 needles. Join C C and work even in striping pattern until piece measures 7½ inches above neckband. SHAPE TOP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 19(19-19-21) sts. Work even on 23 (23-23-26) sts until piece measures 4¼(4¼-4¼-4¼) inches above last group of bound off sts. Sl sts onto a holder. Sew sides to bound off edges.
FINISHING: Sew sleeve and underarm seams. WAISTBAND: Using No. 5 needle and M C, with right side facing you, pick up 130(136-140-146) sts across lower edge. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2(2-2½-2½) inches. Bind off. FRONT BAND: Using No. 5 needle and M C, with right side facing you, pick up 92(94-96-98) sts across right front edge to end of neckband, 42 sts on front edge of hood, K 23(23-23-26) sts from holder, pick up 42 sts on other side of hood and 92(94-96-98) sts on left front edge — 291(295-299-306) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 rows, ending at lower right front edge. BUTTONHOLES: Work 4 sts, bind off the next 2 sts, * work until there are 10 sts on needle after last bound off sts, bind off the next 2 sts, repeat from * 6 times more, work in ribbing to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts over each group of 2 sts bound off previous row. Work in ribbing for 4 rows more. Bind off. Finish buttonholes. Block. CORD: Using M C, make a ch 30 inches long. Weave ch through neckband and trim at each end with a C C pompon. Sew on buttons.
MITTENS
RIGHT MITTEN: Using No. 5 d p needles and C C, cast on 49(49-56-56) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work as follows in K 5, P 2 ribbing: 2 rows C C, 10 rows M C, 2 rows C C, 4 rows M C. Break off C C. Using M C, dec 1 st at center of EVERY K rib — 42(42-48-48) sts. Change to No. 3 d p needles and K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 1 inch. Change to No. 5 d p needles and K 1 round, dec at even intervals to 36(40-40-44) sts. K round and round until piece measures 1½(l¾-2-2¼) inches above ribbing. THUMB: Using small strand of C C, K 6(7-7-8) sts to mark placing of thumb, sl the 6(7-7-8) sts just worked back on left hand needle and, using M C, K these same 6(7-7-8) sts, K to end of round. Continue in M C stockinette st on 36(40-40-44) sts until piece measures 1½ inches less than desired finished length of mitten. SHAPE TOP: Round 1: * K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 12(14-14-16), K 2 tog, K 1, repeat from * once more — 4 sts decreased. Round 2: Knit. Round 3: * K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 10(12-12-14), K 2 tog, K 1, repeat from * once more — 4 sts decreased. Round 4: Knit. Continue in this manner to dec 4 sts in a round every other round 3 times more. Break off, leaving an end for weaving. Weave back and palm sts tog. THUMB: Pull out C C strand and divide upper and lower sts on 3 No. 5 d p needles. Join M C and K, picking up 1 extra st in each corner — 13(15-15-17) sts. K round and round until thumb measures 2(2¼-2¼-2½) inches. On next round K 2 tog 6(7-7-8) times, K 1. Break off, leaving an end. Draw end through all sts on needles. Fasten off tightly. Block.
LEFT MITTEN: Work to correspond to right mitten, reversing placing of thumb.
