These directions are for subteen medium size (8-10). Changes for subteen large size (12-14) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Germantown (2 oz. skeins) — 5(6)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 5 and 9 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 d p needle or cable holder
1 steel crochet hook No. 0
7 buttons
1 yd 1 inch grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 13(15) sts plus 1.
Row 1: * K 1, P 2(3), K 8, P 2(3), repeat from * ending K 1.
Row 2 and all even rows: * P 1, K 2(3), P 8, K 2(3), repeat from * ending P 1.
Row 3: * K 1, P 2(3), sl next 4 sts onto d p needle and hold in back of work, K 4, K the 4 sts from d p needle (cable twist), P 2(3), repeat from *, ending K 1.
Row 5, 7, 9 and 11: Repeat Row 1.
Row 12: Repeat Row 2.
Repeat these 12 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 72(82) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. P the next row, inc at even intervals to 79(91) sts. Change to No. 9 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 8(8½) inches. SHAPE DOLMAN SLEEVES: At the beg of each of the next 8 rows cast on 3(6) sts and at the beg of each of the next 6 rows cast on 9(7) sts, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work even on 157(181) sts until sleeves measure 4(5) inches above last group of cast on sts. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 13(12) sts. At the beg of each of the next 12 rows bind off 9(11) sts. Bind off remaining 23(25) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 40(44) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. P the next row, inc at even inter­vals to 45(49) sts. Change to No. 9 needles. Row 1: Work Row 1 of pattern st on 39(45) sts, put a marker on needle, P 6(4) (front band). Row 2: K 6(4), work Row 2 of pattern st on 39(45) sts. Keeping sts of front band in reverse stockin­ette, and remaining sts in pattern st, work even until piece measures 8(8½) inches. SHAPE DOLMAN SLEEVE: At arm edge cast on 3(6) sts 4 times and 9(7) sts 3 times, form­ing new patterns as sts are increased. Work even on 84(94) sts until sleeve measures 4(5) inches above last group of cast on sts, ending at front edge. Shape Neck: At neck edge bind off 7(6) sts. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 13(12) sts. At neck edge bind off 2 sts 5 times and at arm edge bind off 9(11) sts 6 times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing placing of front band and all shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures 1 inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, P 1(2), bind off the next 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts over those bound off previous row. Make 6 more buttonholes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made ½ inch below start of neck shaping.

COLLAR: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 77 sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 1 inch. Change to No. 9 needles and continue in ribbing until piece measures 3 inches. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. CUFFS: Using No. 5 needles, with right side facing you, pick up 42(48) sts across lower edge of sleeve. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. Bind off in ribbing. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around front and neck edges. Sew on collar to within ½ inch of each front edge. Block. Finish buttonholes. Face fronts with ribbon. Sew on buttons.
