Sizes 2 and 3 years in parentheses

MATERIAL:
3 (4-4) skeins Knitting Worsted Half Nylon and Half Wool blue (2 oz. skein), or
7 (8-9) skeins Germantown Sportyarn blue (1 oz. skein)
1 (1-1) skein each yellow and white Knitting Worsted or Germantown Sportyarn (1 oz. skein) for chickens
small amount of red and black for feet, beaks and eyes
1 pair knitting needles each No. 4 and No. 6
1 set sock needles No. 4
3 stitch holders
1 crochet hook No. 4 or E

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch

BACK:
With blue and No. 4 needles cast on 60 (64-68) sts. and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 inch. Incr. 2 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 6 needles and stock. st. Work even for 2 rows. Start design following chart. With 62 (66-70) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 8 (9-9½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Shape raglan armhole: Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 (2-2) sts. 1st row: K2, slip 1, K1, p.s.s.o., K to last 4 sts., K2 tog., K2. 2nd row: P back. Repeat these 2 rows 17 (19-21) times, rem. 24 sts. (all sizes) slip-on a holder.

FRONT:
Work Front as Back until 10 (11-12) raglan shapings are completed. (38 (40-42) sts. left). Work across 11 (12-13) sts. and slip them to a holder to be worked later, bind off next 16 sts. (all sizes) for neck. Work across rem. 11 (12-13) sts. Cont. to decr. raglan shaping at armhole edge 7 (8-9) times more and at the same time decr. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times. Fasten off. Slip sts. from holder back to needle, connect yarn and finish this side of neck to correspond.

SLEEVE:
With blue and No. 4 needles cast on 32 (36-36) sts. and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 inch. Incr. 4 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 6 needles and stock. st. Work even for 2 rows. Start design following chart working only hen with 1 chicken on each side. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until 44 (48-54) sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 8 (9-9½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Shape raglan armhole: bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 (2-3) sts. Decr. for raglan as on back 17 (19-21) times. Rem. 6 sts. slip on a holder. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING:
Sew up side and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves to front and back of sweater. Turtle Neck: Right side facing you, pick up with blue and No. 4 sock needles 64 (68-72) sts. (incl. sts. from holders) and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 3 (3-3½) inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P.

HAT:
Cast on 90 (90-100) sts. with No. 6 needles and work in stock. st. for 2 rows, then work design as on back and front having 13 (18-18) sts. plain on each end. After pattern is completed work even until hat measures 4 (4½-5) inch. from beg. Now start to decr. 1st row: * K7 (7-8), K2 tog., repeat from * across row (80 (80-90) sts. left). 2nd and all even rows: P back. 3rd row: * K6 (6-7), K2 tog., repeat from * across row (70 (70-80) sts.) 5th row: * K5 (5-6), K2 tog., repeat from * across row (60 (60-70) sts.) Cont. to work this way decr. 10 sts. every K row until 10 sts. are left over. Break yarn leaving a 10 inch end. Thread a tapestry needle with this end, pull sts. tog. and fasten off tightly on wrong side. Sew up back seam.

EARLAPS:
Right side facing you, starting in 28th (28th-30th) st. from back seam, pick up with blue and No. 6 needles 28 (28-30) sts. to back seam, cont. to pick up 28 (28-30) sts. on other side of back seam. Work in stock. st. for ½ inch. Divide the work as follows: K24 (24-26) and slip them to a holder to be worked later, bind off next 8 sts. (all sizes), K24 (24-26). Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every row until 4 sts. (all sizes) are left. Work in ribbing K1, P1 for 6½ inch. (all sizes) Bind off. Slip sts. of other earlap back to needle, connect yarn and finish this side the same way. With No. 4 crochet hook work 1 row s.c. around front and back of hat incl. earlaps. Make a pompon and sew to top of hat. Block to size.
