Rib Stitch Sweater Pattern #44

Size 14 Years

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 7 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2.
A leather belt.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 104 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 4 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 118 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 9 inches. To shape for Raglan sleeves to fit into later, dec. 1 st at end of each row until 38 sts remain. Work straight for 1 inch. Bind off.

Front. Work exactly as for Back.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 64 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there are 84 sts on needle. To shape top of sleeve, dec. 1 st at end of each row until 74 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 12 times (50 sts). Now dec. 1 st at end of each row until 16 sts remain. Work straight for 1 inch. Bind off.

Sew up underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams. Place sleeves between shapings of Back and Front, and sew in place.

Cord. With 2 strands of yarn make a chain about 30 inches long. Draw chain over and under each stockinette st rib, 1 inch down from neck edge, and tie as in illustration.
