Snow Suit Pattern

Size 3, Size 5 in parenthesis

MATERIAL:
Pants: 3 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skeins)
Jacket: 2 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skeins)
Hat and Mittens together: 1 skein Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein)
1 pair S.P. knitting needles No. 2 (3 mm.) and No. 5 (4 mm.)
1 circular knitting needle No. 2 and No. 5, 24 inch. long
1 set D.P. knitting needles No. 2 (3 mm.) and No. 5 (4 mm.)
Elastic for waistband
6 buttons for jacket
1 button for hat

GAUGE: 5½ sts. = 1 inch

LEGGINGS: Cast on 140 (148) sts. with No. 2 circular needle. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing K2, P2, for 6 rounds. Next round work for beading * K2, yarn over, P2 tog., repeat from * across round. Work ribbing K2, P2 until entire piece measures 2 (2½) inch. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern and increase 16 sts. at even intervals across first round.
1st round: P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K56 (60), P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K56 (60). Repeat 1st round 3 times more.
5th round: * P2, slip next 4 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 4 sts., K the 4 sts. off the extra needle (a cable made), P2, slip next 4 sts. to an extra needle and hold in back of work, K next 4 sts., K the 4 sts. off the extra needle (a cable made), P2, K56 (60)*. Repeat from * across.
6th to 12th round: Like 1st round.
13th round: Like 5th round.
Repeat pattern from 5th to 12th round, cabling the K8 sts. every 8th round. Work even until piece measures 2½ (3) inch. after ribbing.
Next round: P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K28 (30), increase 1 st. (to increase this st. pick up the thread of row below, put it on left hand needle and K it from the back), K28 (30), P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K28 (30), increase 1 st. as before, K28 (30). Continue to work in pattern for 5 rounds.
Next round: P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K28 (30), increase 1 st., K1, increase 1 st., K28 (30), P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K28 (30), increase 1 st., K1, incr., 1 st., K28 (30).
Continue to work this way, increasing every 6th round 2 sts. in front and back, having 2 more sts. between increases until 17 (21) sts. are in crotch. Pants should measure now 11½ inch. in all. Slip the 17 (21) crotch sts. in front and back to a safety pin, and work each leg now separately on No. 5 straight needles continuing the cable pattern. Work even for 1 (1½) inch. Decrease 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row 4 (6) times. Work even until 14½ (15½) inch. from crotch or any des. length to ankle. Decrease to 48 sts. in next row and discontinue the cable pattern. Change to No. 2 needles and K2, P2 for 2½ inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Work the other leg to correspond.

FINISHING: Weave the crotch sts. tog. and sew up leg seams. Steam lightly and pull elastic through beading row.

JACKET

BACK: Cast on 68 (72) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 (2½) inch. Change to No. 5 needles and stock. st. (Incr. 1 st. at each end of first needle for size 5 only). With 68 (74) sts., work even until the entire piece measures 8½ (9½) inch. or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 (4) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (58 (62) sts. left). Work even for 5½ (5¾) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 rows 9 (10) sts., rem. 22 sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT: Cast on 42 (46) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 (2½) inch., keeping the 6 center front sts. in garter st. for buttonhole border throughout the entire front. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern: K6 (border) K8 (10), P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K6 (8). With 42 (46) sts., work even until the entire piece measures like back. Bind off for armhole at seam edge 4 (6) sts. and at the beg. of the next row at seam edge 2 sts. (36 (38) sts. left). Work even for 3¾ (4) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 8 (10) sts. at center edge and then always 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 20 (22) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder 10 (11) sts. at armhole edge twice. Work the other front to correspond and make 6 button­holes in front border, starting buttonhole after ½ inch from beg. (To make a buttonhole, K2 sts., bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts.) Repeat buttonholes every 1¾ (2) inch. 5 times more.

SLEEVES: With No. 2 needles cast on 36 (40) sts. and K2, P2 for 2 (2½) inch. Increase 6 sts. at even intervals across last row and change to No. 5 needles and pattern: K10 (12), P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K10 (12). Work in pattern as before, increasing 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 6th row until 54 (58) sts. on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 10 (11½) inch. or any desired length to underarm. Bind off 3 sts. at the beg. of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st. at the beg. of the next 4 rows. Decrease 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row twice, bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 22 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Wrong side facing you, pick up around neck with No. 2 needles 60 sts. for collar. Work in stock. st. keeping the first and last 4 sts. on needle in garter st. and increase 1 st. at the beg. and end of every K row inside garter st. border until collar is 2½ inch. wide. Work 4 rows garter st. Bind off. Steam lightly and sew on 6 buttons.

HAT: For Earlaps: cast on 22 sts. with No. 5 needles and work in cable st. pattern as on leggings for 2 inch. Put sts. on a holder and work a second piece the same way. Put on holder. Take No. 3 sock needles and cast on for front of hat 36 sts., work 22 sts. from holder on to 2nd needle and cast on 32 sts. for back of hat. Work 22 sts. from other holder, join being careful not to twist sts. Now work ribbing K2, P2 on the 36 front sts., cable st. pattern on the first earlap, K2, P2 on the 32 back sts, and cable st. pattern on the 2nd earlap. Work this way until ribbing measures 1¼ inch. then change to No. 5 needles and continue to work cable st. pattern on the sides and the rem. sts. K all the time until the entire hat measures 5 inch. Next round: K36, P2 tog., K8, P2 tog., K8, P2 tog., K32, P2 tog., K8, P2 tog. K8, P2 tog. From now on discon­tinue cable pattern and decrease 6 sts. at even intervals across next row. Next row: * K8, K2 tog. repeat from * across row. Work 1 row even. Next row: * K7, K2 tog. re­peat from * across row. Work 1 row even. Next row: * K6, K2 tog. repeat from * across row. Work 1 row even. Con­tinue to work this way having 1 st. less between the de­creases every other row until there is 1 st. between the de­creases left. Break yarn, leaving about 10 inch. Thread a tapestry needle and pull the yarn twice through the rem. sts. Fasten off tightly on wrong side. With No. 4 crochet hook, crochet 2 rows s. c. around the earlaps. For strap, ch. 20 sts. and work 4 rows s.c. Sew strap to one side of hat and make a loop on other side of strap for a button­hole. Sew on a button.

MITTENS

Cast on 28 (32 sts.) with No. 2 sock needles. Join and work in ribbing for 2 inches. Change to plain K and No. 5 sock needles and work even for ¾ (1) inch. Slip next 4 (5) sts. to a safety pin and cast on 4 (5) sts. Join and work even for 2 (2¼) inches. Decrease for tip, next round: * K 2, K 2 tog. Repeat from * across round. K 1 round even. Next round: * K 1, K 2 tog. repeat from * across round. K 1 round even. Next round: * K 2 tog. repeat from * across round. Break yarn and leave a 7 inch end, thread a tapestry needle with this end and run twice through remaining sts. Pull sts. tog. and fasten off on wrong side.
Thumb: Pick up 4 (5) sts. from safety pin and 4 (5) sts. on the 4 (5) cast on sts., divide sts. on 3 needles and work even for ¾ (1) inch. K 2 sts. tog. across round. Finish off as tip. Work other mitten the same way.
