MATERIAL:
4  (5) balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball)
1 pair S.P. knitting needles No. 2 (3 mm.) and No. 3 (3¼ mm.)
5 buttons

GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch

BACK: Cast on 88 (96) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. With 88 (96) sts., work even until the entire piece measures 9½ (10½) inch. or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 (6) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (74 (80) sts. left). Work even for 5½ (6) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 (4) rows 8 (13) sts., rem. 26 (28) sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT: Cast on 52 (56) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch., keeping the 6 center front sts. in garter st. for buttonhole border throughout the entire front. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. Work even until the entire piece measures like back. Bind off for armhole at seam edge 6 (7) sts. and at the beg. of the next 2 rows at seam edge 2 sts. (42 (45) sts. left.) Decrease 1 st. at center edge inside garter st. border every K row until 24 (26) sts. are left over besides the 6 border sts. Work as high as back and bind off at armhole edge 8 (13) sts. 3 (2) times. Work the rem. 6 border sts. for 2 inch., slip sts. to a holder. Work other front to corres­pond making 5 buttonholes in front border, starting first buttonhole ½ inch. from beg. (To make a buttonhole, K2 sts., bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts.). Repeat buttonholes every 2 inch. 4 times more.

SLEEVE: Cast on 48 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch. Increase 4 sts. at even intervals in last row. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. Increase 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until 70 (74) sts. on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 11 (12) inch. or any desired length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 sts. Decrease 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 54 (58) sts. on needle. Decrease 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row until 46 sts. are left. Bind off 2 sts. at the beginning of each row until 26 sts. are left over. Bind off.

POCKET: With No. 3 needles cast on 24 sts. Work in stock. sts. for 1¾ inch., keeping the first and last 3 sts. on needle in garter st. Work 6 rows garter st. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Weave the 6 border sts. tog. and sew the border piece around neck. Sew on pocket. Steam lightly and sew on buttons.
