MATERIAL:
10 (11-12) balls 4 ply Sweateryarn (1 oz. ball)
1 pair knitting needles No. 2 and No. 4
8 buttons
1½ yards grosgrain ribbon
GAUGE: 6 sts. = 1 inch
PATTERN: Stock. st. throughout the entire sweater.
BACK: Cast on 104 (108-112) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch., increasing 4 (4-6) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 4 needles and stock. st. With 108 (112-118) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 14 (14½-15) inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 7 (7-7) sts., at the beg. of the next 4 rows 2 sts. (86 (90-96) sts. are left). Work even for 7½ (7¾) inch, from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 (8-6) rows 9 (7-10) sts., rem. 32 (34-36) sts. bind off for neck.
FRONT: Cast on 60 (62-64) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch., keeping the 6 center front sts. in garter st. for buttonhole border throughout the entire front. Incr. 3 (4-4) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 4 needles and stock. st. With 63 (66- 68) sts. work even until the entire piece measures the same as back up to underarm. Bind off for armhole at seam edge 8 (8-10) sts. and at the beg. of the next 3 rows at seam edge 2 sts. Decr. 1 st. at seam edge until 47 (50-50) sts. are left. Work even for 5½ (5¾) inch, from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 12 (14-14) sts. at center edge and then always 2 sts. at neck edge until 27 (28-30) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 9 (7-10) sts. 3 (4-3) times. Work other front to correspond and make 8 buttonholes in front border, starting first buttonhole after ½ inch. (To make a buttonhole: K2 sts., bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts.) Repeat buttonholes every 2 inch. 7 times more.
SLEEVE: Cast on 48 (52- 52) sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch., increasing 6 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 4 needles and stock st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the K row every 6th row until 78 (82-86) sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 17 (17½-18) inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 (6-7) sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 60 (62-64) sts. are left. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row until 46 (48-52) sts. are on needle. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 26 (28-32) sts. are left over. Work the other sleeve to correspond.
FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Right side facing you, pick up with No. 2 needles 84 (88-92) sts. and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 1 inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Steam lightly and sew buttons in place.
