MATERIAL FOR "MOTHER" SWEATER:
6 balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn, main color (1 oz. ball) (m. c.)
1 ball 3 ply Fingering Yarn, light contrasting color

1 ball 3 ply Fingering Yarn, dark contrasting color
(1 oz. ball) (dark c. c.)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 2 and No. 3
1 set sock needles No. 2
GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch
PATTERN: Stock. st. throughout entire sweater.
BACK: With m. c. cast on 108 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 3½ inch., increasing 6 sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Work stripe pattern in stock. St. as follows: 4 rows m. c., 6 rows dark c. c., 10 rows light c. c. With 114 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 12½ inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 6 sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (98 sts. left). Work even for 3 inch, from the first binding off. Discontinue working in stripe pattern and work in m.c. only until armhole measures 7½ inch from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 rows 10 sts., rem. 38 sts. bind off.
FRONT: With m. c. cast on 112 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 3½ inch., increasing 8 sts., at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and work stripe pattern in stock. st. as on back. With 120 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 12½ inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 6 sts. and at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. Decr. 1 st. at each end of every other row until 100 sts. are left. Work even for 3 inch, from the first binding off. Discontinue working in stripe pattern and work in m. c. only until armhole measures 5½ inch, from the first binding off. Work across 38 sts. and slip them to a stitch holder, bind off 24 sts. for neck and work over rem. 38 sts. Work over these 38 sts. only and bind off 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 30 sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off at armhole edge 10 sts. 3 times. Work the other side of the neck to correspond.
SLEEVE: With m. c. cast on 48 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2½ inch., increasing 6 sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until 88 sts. on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 17½ inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 72 sts. are left. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row until 60 sts. are on needle. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 40 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work the other sleeve to correspond.
FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Right side facing you, pick up with m. c. and No. 2 sock needles 116 sts. around the neck and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 3¼ inch. Bind off K as K and P as P and steam slightly.

4 balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball), main color (m. c.)
1 ball 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball), light contrasting color (light c. c.)
1 ball 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball), dark contrasting color (dark c. c.)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 2 and No. 3
1 set sock needles No. 2
PATTERN AS ON "MOTHER" SWEATER:
BACK: With m. c. cast on 88 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 inch., increasing 6 sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. and work stripe pattern in stock. st. as on "Mother" Sweater. With 94 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 10 inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (80 sts. left). Work even for 1¾ inch, from the first binding off, discontinue to work in stripe pattern and work in m. c. only until armhole measures 5½ inch, from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 rows 8 sts., rem. 32 sts. bind off.
FRONT: Work front the same way as back until 4 inch, from the first binding off. (Discontinue stripe pattern after 1¾ inch, and work in m. c. only.) Work over 30 sts. and slip them to a holder, bind off for neck 20 sts. and work over rem. 30 sts. only. Bind off 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 24 sts. are left over. Work as high as back, and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 8 sts. 3 times. Connect the yarn to other side of neck and finish to correspond.
SLEEVE: With m.c. cast on 44 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2 inch., increasing 4 sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until 66 sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 12 inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 56 sts. are left. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row until 46 sts. are on needle. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 22 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work the other sleeve to correspond.
FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Right side facing you, pick up with No. 2 sock needles 98 sts. and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 3 inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Steam slightly.
