MATERIAL FOR SLIP-OVER:
7 balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball)
1 pair Knitting Needles No. 3
1 set sock needles No. 2

GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN FOR BORDER:
1st row: * K4, P2, K1, P2, repeat from * across row, end K4.
2nd row: * P4, K5, repeat from * across row, end P4.
3rd row: like 1st row.
4th row: like 2nd row.
5th row: * slip 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 2 sts. K the 2 sts. off the extra needle (a cable made), P2, K1, P2, repeat from * across row.
6th row: like 2nd row.
7th row: like 1st row.
8th row: like 2nd row.
9th row: like 5th row.
Repeat pattern from 5th to 8th row incl.

BACK: Cast on 112 sts. with No. 3 needles and work in border pattern for 4 inch. Change to stock. st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the K row every ½ inch 5 times. With 122 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 12½ inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 8 sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts., decr. 1 st. at each end of every other row until 100 sts. are left. Work even for 7½ inch, from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 8 rows 7 sts., rem. 44 sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT: Cast on 122 sts. with No. 3 needles and work in border pattern for 4 inch. Change to stock. st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the K row every ½ inch 3 times. With 128 sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 10 sts. and at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. Decr. 1 st. at each end of every other row until 100 sts. are left. Work even for 5½ inch, from the first binding off. Work over 40 sts. and slip them to a holder, bind off for neck 20 sts. and work over rem. 40 sts. Work over these 40 sts. only and bind off 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 28 sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off at armhole edge 7 sts. 4 times. Work the other side of the neck to correspond.

SLEEVE: Cast on 85 sts. with No. 3 needles and work in border pattern for 2 inch. Change to stock. st. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every other row until 91 sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 4½ inch. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 73 sts. are left. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row until 59 sts. are left. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 35 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Right side facing you, pick up with No. 2 sockneedles 104 sts. around the neck and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 8 rows. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Steam lightly.

MATERIAL FOR CARDIGAN:
9 balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 2 and No. 3
7 buttons

GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN FOR BORDER AS ON SLIP-OVER:
BACK: Cast on 121 sts. with No. 3 needles and work in pattern for 3½ inch. Change to stock. st. and incr. 5 sts. at even intervals across first row. With 126 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 13 inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 10 sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (102 sts. left). Work even for 7½ inch, from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 rows 10 sts., rem. 42 sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT: Cast on 70 sts. with No. 3 needles and work in pat­tern (* P2, K1, P2, K4 repeat from * across row end K4) for 3½ inch., keeping the 7 center front sts. throughout the entire front in garter st. for buttonhole border. Change to stock. st. but work the 2 front cable patterns after border all the way up as shown in picture. With 70 sts. work even until the entire piece measures the same as back up to underarm. Bind off for armhole at seam edge 10 sts. and at the beg. of the next 2 rows at seam edge 2 sts., decr. 1 st. at seam edge 3 times (53 sts.). Work even for 5½ inch, from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 13 sts. at center edge and then always 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 30 sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 10 sts. 3 times. Work other front to correspond and make 7 buttonholes in front border, starting first buttonhole after ½ inch. (To make a buttonhole: K2 sts., bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts.) Repeat button­holes every 2 inch. 6 times more.

SLEEVE: Cast on 67 sts. with No. 3 needles and work in pat­tern for 3 inch. Change to stock. st., but work the 2 center cable patterns all the way up the sleeve. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the K row every 6th row until 97 sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 17 inch, or any desired length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 6 sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 73 sts. are left. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row until 61 sts. are on needle. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 37 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Right side facing you, pick up with No. 2 needles 108 sts. around the neck and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 8 rows. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Sew buttons in place and steam lightly.
